Celebrating The Life Of Mary Kitzul
Mary Kitzul (Chrunik), 95, of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, passed away on January 21, 2025, in Foam Lake. She was laid to rest on January 24, 2024 at the Foam Lake Cemetery. Foam Lake, Saskatchewan.
Mary was born in Foam Lake on September 21, 1929, to Roman and Nellie Chrunik. She grew up on the family farm near West Bend with her ten siblings and attended Coleraine School, walking 2½ miles each day to attend the Country school
Mary met Joe Kitzul at a school dance, and they married in 1952. Together, they farmed in the West Bend area, where Mary fully embraced the hard work of farm life. She raised chickens, milked cows, made butter, and tended to her impressive vegetable and flower gardens. She also found time to enjoy softball and curling.
Mary was not only Joe’s wife but also his nurse and caregiver throughout his life, especially after his heart transplant. Her strength, dedication, and love ensured he had the best possible care, allowing them to share many wonderful years together.
In 1990, Mary and Joe retired to Foam Lake, where she quickly immersed herself in community life—joining the bowling league, exercise classes, bingo nights, and the perogy-making crew at the community center. She was also a seniors' club advisor and a dedicated member of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Mary and Joe shared a love of travel, visiting Hawaii for their 25th anniversary, as well as Europe, Australia, Mexico, and many U.S. destinations. Later, Mary traveled with her children to Las Vegas, Alaska, and the Caribbean. She finally gave up traveling after an unexpected airport encounter—when she and a friend were bumped from a flight in Toronto to make room for The Rolling Stones on their Canadian tour.
One of the family’s most cherished places was the Fishing Lake cabin, built by Joe and Mary in 1980. It became the heart of family gatherings every summer for 50 years.
Mary’s Greatest Joy: Her Family
She was the family’s biggest advocate and cheerleader, never missing her children’s and grandchildren’s milestones—graduations, sporting events, and special occasions. She was always there to help with new grandbabies, and she made sure everyone felt loved, supported, and well-fed.
Mary had a fun-loving and strong-willed spirit. She loved to tease, sing, and speak her mind, bringing laughter and honesty to every gathering. She also loved playing cards and bingo with her friends and grandchildren, creating wonderful memories full of fun and joy.
