Obituary of Sylvia Marquette
Celebrating The Life Of Sylvia Marquette
Sylvia Therese Marquette (nee Wrubleski) was born to Edmund and May Wrubleski on June 7, 1961, in Wadena, Saskatchewan. Sylvia grew up on the family farm near Kuroki, SK, the baby of nine children. Sylvia began her love of singing, when singing with the Kuroki St. Helena’s Catholic Church Choir. Tragically, her dad died in a car accident when Sylvia was just 5 years old. Sylvia and her family remained living on the farm. She attended school in Kelvington until Grade 8. In 1975, Sylvia and her mom moved to Wadena where she started Grade 9, at Wadena Composite School, joining the school band, recording a record “I’ll Always Remember”. Sylvia loved to play volleyball, sewing and fashion, and working on a shared love of interior decorating projects with her mom. Sylvia was a dancer and cherished her time in Wadena with her ballet group. After graduating, Sylvia moved to Saskatoon, attending one year of university, studying Phys Ed and working at St. Paul’s hospital. In 1981, returning to Wadena, she and her cousins Roseanne and Valerie formed the band, “RSVP”. In 1981, Sylvia and Emile noticed each other while Sylvia was playing in the band at Foam Lake Bar. They married on August 21, 1982; five children were born to this union. Emile and Sylvia worked alongside Emile’s parents, Maurice and Connie, on the family farm. Sylvia and Emile grain and cattle farmed, and capably ran a 100 head dairy for 30 years. Sylvia also drove school bus. After they sold the diary cattle, they created Marquette Garden, they grew and sold garden produce at both farmer’s markets and in grocery stores across Western Canada. What began as a hobby of a few onions and cabbage soon grew to 40 acres of many different vegetables and herbs for over 12 years. Sylvia’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She gave of her time and gifts; singing in St. Helena’s Parish choir, leading the choir for Perigord’s St.Athanase Catholic Church every Sunday, as a member for the Perigord CWL, teaching Catechism, First Communion and Confirmation classes, volunteering for Perigord’s many fall suppers, snowmobile derbies, rummage sales and making banners and flower arrangements for the church. She always felt it was a great honor to sing at weddings, funerals, and special events in the community. Sylvia loved to sing and shared that “it got her through both celebrations and challenges in life”. Sylvia loved being creative, dancing, acting, sewing, and decorating cakes. She sewed her own wedding dress, many grad and bridesmaid dresses, baptismal gowns, etc. She taught dance and aerobics classes and was president of the Kelvington Dance Club. With her childhood friend, Shelly, they taught drama at KHS. Sylvia’s garden was a labour of love filled with beautiful flowers and large gardens. She avidly canned, froze, preserved and made jams, jellies, and salsa always with fresh produce. Sylvia had an incredible work ethic that she instilled in her children. Celebrating the holidays with family and friends was of Sylvia’s favorite. Easter and Lent was the most important season for her, spiritually. Sylvia and Emile hosted family and friends Christmas Eve, after celebrating midnight mass at Perigord. Sylvia made creative homemade costumes for Halloween, themed outfits for Lionelle’s shows, bridal showers, etc. Sylvia loved to share in fun and laughter with family and friends, and her contagious personality gifted others around her. While cooking wasn’t her favourite, she made incredible meals. She knew how to bring people together and how to make them feel seen, heard, and loved. For friends and family, she cut hair, did home design and ‘While You Were Out’ for friends. However, she also loved the small moments, such as playing Trivial Pursuit with the Wrubleski side of the family or playing Bananagrams, a love for word games - like her mom. She genuinely cared for others, commenting how intelligent, beautiful, talented, or wonderful people were. She always had a positive outlook and encouraging words to give. Sylvia made the world a better place and was genuine, caring, and kind to all. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to hear her beautiful songs and loved her dearly. Left to mourn Sylvia are her beloved husband Emile; children Raquel (Jason) Tokarchuk, Brigitte (Tom Bryson) Marquette, Michael (Brogan) Marquette, Holly (Sean) Craib-Petkau, and Ian (Laura) Marquette; grandchildren - Eli, Sophie, Gavin, William, Brielle, Henry and Monroe, whom she loved dearly. She was a treasured daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, cousin, auntie and godmother. She is survived by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Connie and Maurice Marquette; siblings Tim (Brenda) Wrubleski, Phil (Mary) Wrubleski, Ted (Peggy) Wrubleski, Annette Rudyk, Juliette (Allan) Franke, and Lucille Silveira; many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews and extended relatives, friends, former classmates, and the communities she spent her life in and loved. Sylvia is predeceased by her parents Edmund and May (nee Woloshyn) Wrubleski; two brothers Martin and Robert; brother-in-law Allan Rudyk, and great-nephew Vynn Choquette. Sylvia’s family would like to thank everyone who visited her as her health declined or offered support to family throughout this difficult time. The love and care she received in her final months was a true reflection of the love and care she gave others. Sylvia was brave this past year, after a brain tumor was found and operated on in April. She was diagnosed in May with glioblastoma, an incurable and aggressive brain cancer. As her health declined, her beautiful smile radiated. Sylvia went home to her loving Saviour on February 3, 2025, at Kelvington Hospital, Kelvington, SK surrounded by love. Sylvia’s brother Ted Wrubleski joined her in the heavens the day after Sylvia’s passing on February 4, 2025, in British Columbia after a long cancer battle.
