Obituary of Nadia Zack
In Loving Memory Of Nadia Zack
Nadia Olga Tutkaluk was born to Peter and Tekla Tutkaluk on July 28, 1928. She was the middle child and only daughter. Nadia went to school in Val Marie, SK. She was very smart and skipped 3 grades. Nadia started teaching at the age of 16, teaching in a few country schools until settling at the Touchwood Country School outside of Wishart, SK. She taught grades 1-12 in a one room school. Nadia continued to study throughout her life, earning Bachelor Degrees in Arts & Sciences, Education and Special Education. She was fluent in English, Ukrainian, French and Russian. Later in her life, Nadia taught at the Wishart School and Kawakatoose School. After many years of shaping young minds, Nadia retired at the age of 72.
Nadia met William “Bill” Zack when she was staying at the Zack family farm while teaching at the Touchwood Country School. They were married on August 5, 1951 in Wishart, SK. In 1952, Nadia & Bill welcomed twins, Carol & Christine, Lesia was born in 1964 and completing the family in 1967, Donny was born. Nadia and Bill lived on the Zack family farm running a mixed farm that included: cattle, chickens, horses, pigs and grain. While teaching full time, Nadia was a huge part of the farm as she used her salary from teaching to purchase farm machinery.
Nadia was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She spoke Ukrainian at home and preferred that her children speak in Ukrainian as well. Nadia ensured her family knew all about the Ukrainian culture. She enjoyed making traditional dishes for others to enjoy. Nadia would make perogies every Thursday, to ensure they would have them fresh for their no meat Friday meal. Nadia was in charge of the creation of the Emerald History book, as she took time interviewing participants and compiling their stories. Nadia refused to have her name recorded to credit her work in the book. She was very family focused and would do anything for her family. Nadia and Bill were active members of the Orthodox church. They both were cantors and Nadia taught Sunday school for many years.
In Nadia’s later years, she enjoyed embroidery, knitting, crocheting, photography and baking. She was always busy no matter the time of year. Nadia was conscious of her family eating healthy and made efforts to reduce the use of dyes and sugars in their meals. Nadia and Bill enjoyed canning, preserving fruits and vegetables. They even drove around Saskatchewan to gather fruits for their preserves.
Nadia’s remaining years were spent at the Golden Acres nursing home in Wynyard until her passing on September 16, 2025.
