Obituary of Vallarie York

In Loving Memory Of Vallarie York

Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Vallarie Alexis York — a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend whose presence touched so many hearts.

Val was born on November 8, 1953, in Sudbury, Ontario, to her parents Norman and Ramona York. She was the third of four children — sister to Gail, and brothers Chris and Darcy. Tragically, her younger brother Darcy passed away at just 10 years old, and her brother Chris later passed suddenly at the age of 59. These losses shaped Val deeply, but they also reinforced her love of family and her strength in the face of hardship.

Her father, Norman, worked long hours as a geologist for Inco mines, while her mother, Ramona, stayed home to care for the children. Despite Ramona’s struggles and the difficulties of her past, Val and her siblings learned to look out for one another and became a tight-knit unit.

As a child, Val loved going fishing with her father and siblings. Her dad would patiently bait all their hooks, barely having time to fish himself, but he always made a delicious meal from the day’s catch. Sundays were especially memorable — their father would pile the kids into the car for a drive, always followed by a treat of ice cream, pop, or chips. And of course, Sunday evenings meant his famous roast dinners, which became cherished family moments. Val often said both her parents were amazing cooks, and it’s no surprise she became one herself.

Christmas was another time of magic for Val. As a little girl, her sister Gail would tease her by saying Santa was on the roof — and Val, wide-eyed and full of wonder, would get so excited. Christmas Day meant gifts and laughter and another incredible family meal prepared with love.

One of Val’s most treasured memories was spending time at her grandparents’ cabin by the lake. There, she swam, boated, and played, making some of the happiest memories of her life. Whenever she spoke about that cabin, her eyes would light up with joy, like a child in a candy store.

In Grade 8, Val left school and spent time traveling with her brother Chris and a few close friends. She eventually met her first husband, Donald Polmateer, and together they had two children — Trevor and Angela. After the passing of her mother in 1974, Val moved to Vancouver, BC with Angela to start anew, while Trevor stayed in Ontario with his father.

Several years later, Val met her second husband, Brad Crocker, and they had a daughter, Kaiannalise Alexis McLeod. Although Val and Brad eventually divorced after 14 years of marriage, it marked the beginning of yet another chapter in Val’s story.

That chapter led her to Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, where she spent her later years surrounded by the love of her daughter Angela, son-in-law Curtis, and beloved grandchildren, Alison and Jasper. There, she found peace, joy, and many days filled with laughter, connection, and deep family bonds.

Val fought cancer three times with incredible courage and grace. On the morning of Sunday, May 25, 2025, she passed away peacefully, having left behind a legacy of resilience, warmth, and love.

Val’s greatest pride and joy in life was her family. She loved deeply, gave generously, and left an imprint on every life she touched. Her absence will be felt deeply, but her spirit — full of strength, humor, and unwavering love — will live on in all of us.

She will be missed more than words can express, and remembered with hearts full of gratitude for having known her.
