Obituary of Julie Sveinbjornson

In Loving Memory Of Julie Sveinbjorson

The family of Julie Stella Sveinbjornson, age 87, is saddened to announce her peaceful death at Golden Acres on Sunday morning June 8, 2025. She was in no pain and with family at her side.

Julie was born by Wishart, SK to Leo and Mary (nee: Smorong) Kocoy. She was joined by siblings Eddie, Edmund, Leona, Stella, Stanley, Martin and Eleanor. Similar to all pioneer women of her generation, Julie worked hard on the family farm and was a loving big sister to her siblings. She completed grade 8, helped her parents and family take care of a large garden and enjoyed caring for animals.

A dance in Kandahar provided the spark for the beginning romance of Julie and John S. Sveinbjornson. After a courtship where John often brought chocolate and flowers for Julie's siblings, too, Julie and John were married on August 26, 1953. Their first son, Lavern, was born in July of 1954 after a harrowing ride to get Julie to the Wynyard Hospital that included impassable roads due to rain and a tractor pull between two sloughs to get to the main highway. Rod followed in 1955 and Candace completed their family in 1959.

Julie immersed herself in raising her family, farming with John, chauffeuring her children to many activities, and contributing to community and church life. Julie loved music and often danced to John's accordion music, encouraged her children to play instruments, cooked delicious food and nurtured many relationships with family, friends and neighbours.

It was shortly after moving from the Kandahar homestead farm to their home just east of Kandahar, that Julie made the decision to embark on what would become a 32- year career as a nurse's aide (continuing care aide) with Golden Acres in Wynyard. Her lifetime of caring and compassion shone through in her work with residents and staff. It was a natural progression for Julie to move to Golden Acres as her health and mobility were impacted while she managed Parkinson's.

Julie Sveinbjornson lived a full and vibrant life. She is predeceased by her: husband John; parents Leo and Mary; brothers Eddie, Edmund and Stanley; brothers-in-law Carl and Rudy; John's parents Sveini and Jacobina; John's brothers Ted (Emily), Helgi (Helen) and John's sister Nina (Alan).

Julie is survived by her children Lavern, Rod (Cheryl) and Candace (Glen); her grandchildren Jared (Rhenda), Janelle, Chad (Paige), Ryan, Robert (Kari), Lori (Robby), Michael (Kim); great grandchildren Emily (Braiden), Taiya, Tianna, Blake, Dierks, Marin, Parker, Abigail, Beckam, Declan, Gavin, Logan, Dylan, Nora and Clara; and one great great grandchild, Lilly. Also, Julie is survived by her sisters Leona, Stella, Eleanor (Mike), brother Martin and numerous nieces, nephews and their families; as well as numerous family friends.
