Obituary of John Fedirko
Celebrating The Life Of John Fedirko
Good morning – Thank you all for attending John’s final time with you.
John Fedirko was born at the family farm on November 24, 1932 to Mike & Helen (Chorney) Fedirko. John was born the first & eldest grandchild to the Fedirko and Chorney family.
John attended a local country school “Mallard” just south of the farm. Growing up on the farm you always pitched in on chores. After leaving school, he left home to seek employment in Ontario. Being young and of small stature jobs were hard to find and he did many various jobs that came along. Eventually at Flin Flon, MB, Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting were hiring miners. There John worked as a “Hard Rock” miner and also as a Ice Man at the local curling rink. After a few years, HBM & S were transferring single men to Snow Lake, MB to open a new mine. John was in the first group sent there. In Snow Lake he enjoyed life, made many friends – everyone was always called by their first name. He led an active life such as fishing, curling, and started a young men’s ball team called “The Snow Lake Hornets”. He was never short of players to join the ball team. John also was a member of the B.P.O.Elks in Flin Flon, MB and so he decided that Snow Lake should have a B.P.O Elks club as well where he was a charter member for 68 years. They raised a lot of funds for the benefit of the Snow Lake community. Weekends were very lively in town - many musicians used their talents to host house parties that would carry on until early dawn, as John loved to dance.
In 1959, John married Dora Kowalchuk of Rama, SK that was also an employee of HBM & S. They were married at Rama, SK in the Ukrainian Catholic Church officiated by John’s uncle - Father Nick Chorney. They settled in Snow Lake, MB and raised two sons: John (Jr) and James. As the boys were growing up, they decided to move away from the mining community to give their sons more opportunity. John went home to Fosston and purchased a Royalite Service Station and fuel delivery service for farmers. It was on Highway 35 just on the outskirts of Fosston and was called “Johnnies Gulf”. Together they built on a residence and had gas pumps and a coffee nook. They were kept busy doing the routine of 7 am to 11 pm operation, 365 days a year. We sold the “station” and in 1982 we moved back to John’s family farm, and started our next career of farming which included horses, cows, chickens, pigs, etc. John had a love for horses and dogs. He was active in the community volunteering on many committees such as school board, municipal, hospital and town, along with many other clubs. John retired from farming and decided on a slower pace.
John started working for the local RCMP detachment in Rose Valley, Kelvington and Wadena as a commissionare. This kept him busy and he enjoyed his many years in this role.
We moved to Wadena to retire in 2011, as age and health were the main factors.
Left to mourn John’s loss is: his wife Doris of 65 years; sons – John (Jr) wife Lori of Regina & James of Chaing Mai, Thailand; 3 grandchildren: Scott of Regina, Sarah of Regina & Daniel of Cochrane, AB and many in-laws and cousins.
Pre-deceased by John: his parents Mike & Helen Fedirko; brother Alex of Beausejour, MB; Ann Krzak of Flin Flon and Jeannette Williams of Vacaville, California.
Now my journey has come to an end and over.
If in anyway in my lifetime I have left someone remembering a grudge,
Please forgive me, and let me rest in peace.
Keep me in your thoughts,
Love You All,
John
