Myrtle Erickson

Obituary of Myrtle Erickson

In Loving Memory Of Myrtle Erickson

Myrtle Erickson was born in 1922 in the homestead shack in the Scrip District, north of Quill Lake, SK. Her parents were Narve and Kristi Erickson. Myrtle was the youngest in their family of 5 children. Her siblings were Torolf, Erik, Ida and Chris. Myrtle took her schooling at the Scrip Country School, where she always talked about how she often got into trouble for talking during school hours. She went to school during the depression but she always maintained that it did not affect her much. The Erickson family always had enough food to eat and all the other students were in the same boat - you know wearing patches, etc. The Erickson family was a very musical family, everyone played an instrument. Myrtle was an exceptional Banjo player, her favorite songs were Red Wing & Me and Bobbie McGee.

Myrtle helped on the farm during the war as her brothers were away. In these times, farming was done by horses and her dad always said that “Mytle could handle a team, as well as any man”. Myrtle liked to ride horses, in her youth, she was a great trick rider, standing on the back of a horse as it galloped.

When Myrtle joined the work force she went to work candling eggs, first in Clair, then Canora and then she took a job at the Creamery in Foam Lake, SK, until it closed in 1965. During this time, in 1963, her parents moved back to Saskatchewan from British Columbia, where they had moved from the farm when Chris began farming. Myrtle’s brother Torolf was working in Foam Lake as well, so the four of them bought a house together. In 1965, they all moved to Quill Lake where Myrtle began working at the Co-op Grocery Store. She worked there for many years. Myrtle was very active in the Quill Lake Community, volunteering at the Curling Rink, The United Church and for many community events over the years, often playing her Banjo for entertainment. Myrtle continued to play her banjo well into her 90’s.

Myrtle always made her family and friends feel welcome in her home and hosted her nieces and nephews over the years. Her door was always open and everyone who knew her appreciated her kindness and hospitality.

After Myrtle’s parents and her brother Torolf passed, she sold their home in Quill Lake and moved into a Low Rental Home – where she stayed until she had a series of mini strokes, which resulted in her needed assistance – she choose to move to Weneeda Assisted Living in Wadena. She remained there until she suffered a major stroke, at which time, she moved to Pleasant View Care Home in Wadena, SK, after spending time in Yorkton and Wadena Hospitals. After that stroke, life was different for Myrtle, as her speech and mobility were impaired. Myrtle passed on July 29, 2025 at the age of 102.

Myrtle is survived by her four nieces, one nephew and their families: nieces – Elaine (Art) Hunter, Darlene (Bill) Sawchuk, Dianne Zagrodney (Allan Ball), Ellen Badgerow and Les (Loreen) Erickson as well as many extended family and friends.

Myrtle was predeceased by her: parents, siblings and nephews-in-law – Eugene Zagrodney, Marvin Badgerow and many many friends and relatives.
