Celebrating The Life Of Margaret Mottram Franks

Margaret Marian Mottram Franks, 99, of Kelvington, Saskatchewan, passed away on August 6, 2025, at Kelvington Hospital.

Margaret was born on May 5, 1926, in Kelvington to the late William and Annie Babecy. After graduating from Kelvington High School, she completed an eight-week teacher training program in 1944. During wartime, many qualified teachers had enlisted in the military, leaving rural schools in urgent need of educators. Margaret answered that call. Her first teaching position was at Orpington School, located nine miles east of Kelvington. Over the years, she also taught at Roscommon, Rosa, Pipestone, Wadena, Vernon Hill, Foam Lake, Nut Mountain, Weyburn, Wynyard, and Kandahar schools.

In 1948, Margaret married William (Billy) Mottram. Margaret and Billy had two sons, Thomas and Brian. Together, they built a farm and shared 21 years of marriage before Billy sadly passed away on October 17, 1969.

Several years later, Margaret married Neville Franks. They enjoyed 25 wonderful years together. Both retired in 1984 and moved back to Kelvington in 1989. Neville passed away in 1998.

Margaret remained active in her community throughout her life. She was a devoted member of the Kelvindell Lodge Auxiliary, the Kelvington Legion, the Kelvington Housing Committee, and contributed to Kelvington's Second History Book. She spearheaded the creation of the Kelvington and Area War Wall Monument, compiling a comprehensive list of local veterans. In recognition of her dedication and service, she was awarded the Canada 150 Volunteer Service Medal.

Margaret is survived by her son Brian Mottram; daughter-in-law Diane Mottram; sister Betty Walker; sisters-in-law Doreen Babecyand Helen Babecy; and grandchildren:

Tyrone (Kari) Mottram,

She is also survived by her many great-grandchildren:

Sam and Isaac Holweger; Cole, Leah, and Corwin Mottram; Jaxon, Evan, and

Fraya Bencharski; Hannah and Parker Mottram; Owen, Aurora, and William Ross;

Harper, Murphy, and Grady Mottram; Paige, Maddison, and Gavin Rorquist, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret was predeceased by: her son Thomas Mottram; her husbands, William Mottram and Neville Franks; her siblings Mike, John, Mary, Harry, and Dora Babecy; brother-in-law Reginald Whitford; and brother-in-law Jim Walker.
