Celebrating The Life Of Richard Petersen

Richard Carl Petersen passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026 in Wadena, SK.

Richard was born on March 19, 1946 in Rose Valley, SK to Carl and Juliet Petersen. He took his elementary schooling at West Shore Country School. He attended one year at Rose Valley School before he went to work for Rustad Bros. in Prince George, BC for two winters. Richard then went to Flin Flon, MB for one winter to work  with Midwest Diamond Drilling. It was then that Richard realized, farming was his future and purchased his first ½ section of land, in 1967. On October 10, 1970, Richard married Lorraine Meleschak and together they built a home and life together. They were blessed with two children, Michelle and Grant.

In 2015, Richard decided to step back from farming and rent his land out, with a farm dispersal in 2016.  He couldn’t keep away from the farming lifestyle, and kept busy helping neighbors out for seeding and harvest. The land was in his blood and the farm he built was a source of pride for Richard. Richard continued living on the farm right up until his last days, celebrating this past Christmas there with his family. His family, especially his grandkids, brought him tremendous joy and he put many miles on driving to attend their activities.

Richard was very community oriented and volunteered with endless clubs: minor hockey, rink committee, sports day committee, church council, rodeo committee to name just a few and then lately with the seniors center. The one group that he was part of the longest was the Mallard Wildlife Federation. Hunting and wildlife conservation was a passion for Richard. He would head out every year to try and fill his tag for Moose or whatever other big game he got drawn for. Richard loved being part of the “Moose Camp Crew” for over 40 years setting up camp in the same spot under the big tree.

Richard also loved music from a young age. He started singing with the church choir in his youth and you could always hear him whistling around the farm or anytime he was working. In his retirement, Richard joined the “Pipestone Men’s Choir” and loved entertaining at senior complexes, fundraisers, or anywhere someone would listen and always had a great time with the “Old Men's Club”.

After Lorraine passed, Richard found a companionship with Linda Chorney. Knowing each other from their childhood, they reconnected and spent many hours visiting, playing crib, and caring for each other. Richard found her love and friendship invaluable and always called her his Angel.

Richard leaves to mourn his: daughter Michelle Grimard, grandchildren -  Paige and Victor, son Grant (Karen) Petersen, grandchildren -  Gauge and Kenzie; special friend Linda Chorney; sisters Myrna Petersen and Glenda (Bud) Petersen; sister-in-law Lesia (John) Sywenky and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Richard is predeceased by his: wife Lorraine; parents Carl and Juliet Petersen;  parents-in-law Andrew and Olga Meleschak; son-in-law Darren Grimard;  sisters Elaine Seimens and Joanne Mohr, and brother Gary Petersen as well as several extended family and friends.

Though Richard may be gone from this earth, his legacy of love, laughter and his impact on those that were a part of his life will forever be etched in our hearts. Richard will be dearly missed.
