Obituary of Bob Johnson
Honouring The Life Of Bob Johnson
It is with sadness that the family of Robert “Bob” Johnson announce his passing after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, on Sunday, January 25th, 2026, at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. Bob passed away fearlessly and peacefully with his family at his side.
On December 14th, 1954, in Foam Lake, SK, Robert (Bob) Allan Johnson was born. Second child to Carl and Velma, Bob was baby brother to Dianne, and big brother to Lorri, Brent and Heather. Bob’s schooling was completed entirely in Foam Lake. After graduation he spent time working in British Columbia before returning home to Foam Lake to work at the family newspaper business.
The Foam Lake Review office was where Bob grew up and where he spent his entire career. As writer, printer, and later editor and publisher, Bob worked along-side his parents, often working through the night to make sure the papers were finished in time to make it to the post-office by Monday morning. Bob was a very hardworking and dedicated newsman. He was a staple at community events, and he worked tirelessly to bring local news to the communities these papers served.
In April 1975, Bob met the new Rec-Director in town, Jeannie Syrota; after being introduced by a mutual friend. They got engaged shortly after in November 1975 and were married on May 8th, 1976. Bob was also a passionate family man. Bob and Jean welcomed their first daughter, Tatum, in March 1977, Melissa in November 1978 and Tayler in August 1984. Bob was a strong father figure who never raised his voice but was always the voice of reason when needed.
As the girls grew, so did Bob’s family. With the addition of three sons-in-law, Greg, Brad and Kruze, Bob was no longer outnumbered. Bob enjoyed visiting with his sons-in-law, solving the world’s problems while fishing, hunting or enjoying a beverage on the deck. Eight grandkids followed soon-after, and Bob’s life truly became full. He was a very hands-on Papa and loved watching his grandkids playing all types of sports. Bob loved cooking and baking for his family and spent a lot of time teaching his grandkids how to make his specialties.
During his time on council and as mayor, he was a part of many passion projects that the residents of Foam Lake benefited from. A few examples included the renovation of The Foam Lake Water Park, the Reverse Osmosis System, and increasing services offered at the Foam Lake Medical Clinic. He was a dedicated man and fought for what he believed in.
In 2023, Bob retired from the family newspaper business. He continued to freelance as the sportswriter for the Foam Lake Review and often thought of writing his own book of short stories.
Throughout his childhood and even more so while retired, Bob enjoyed spending time at “the lake” with his family. He would spend hours on his boat with his grandkids, untying tangled lines, and telling stories.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Velma Johnson, sister Dianne Fisher, and brother Brent Johnson. His in-laws Nestor and Anne Syrota, brother-in-law Barry Syrota, sister-in-law Kathy Syrota.
Left to celebrate Bob’s life are his wife, Jeannie, daughters Tatum (Brad) Luey, Melissa (Greg) Beaudoin, and Tayler (Kruze) Halyk; his grandchildren: Grace Beaudoin, Vivian Beaudoin, Nathan Beaudoin, Charlotte Luey, Sam Luey, Ben Halyk, Nora Halyk, and Madeline Halyk. Sisters Lorri Johnson, Heather McMann, brothers in law Kent McMann and Dennis Fisher. In-laws Diane Syrota, Neil Syrota, Elizabeth (Dave) Collison, Bernadette (Merlyn) Tomyn, Maria (Lyle) Leach, and numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends.
