Celebrating The Life Of Marj Hanson
Marjorie Florence Currie was born on March 2, 1939, to Robert and Florence Currie (Wallington) at the Rose Valley Union Hospital in Rose Valley, SK. She grew up on the family farm 18.5 miles northwest of Rose Valley. Marj was the second oldest child in a family of 9 children. As the oldest daughter, she helped raise her younger siblings while Florence went away to teach school. She minded the children, the cattle and along with her brother Jim, they worked the fields with hoes and a team of horses. Marj and her siblings planted the garden and milked the cows. She was a very hard worker with an impeccable work ethic - there was nothing she couldn’t do.
Marj graduated from Grade 8 attending the Barrier Lake Public School. Marj would have loved to continue her education, but with her mom away she was expected to stay home to raise her siblings. She enjoyed participating in the after-school fights between the Currie kids and the French students. One time after a big rainstorm on the farm, where they had a dozen cows with calves, one of the calves, “July” disappeared. There was always that one calf that was more adventurous than the rest. When the cows came to the barn, July, was missing. Barb and Marj set out, on foot tracking July, while Robert took the tractor searching. They went to the rancher’s place down the road and asked if they had an extra calf in their herd. He said, “no we don’t”, so Marj started calling for July and sure enough July came galloping up, he recognized the girls and started to lick their hands. They got July back and all was good at the Currie Ranch. One of Marj’s jobs was to milk the cows everyday before school. Those cows were her nemesis. Daisy, the milk cow did not like to get milked, she was nervous and was always swishing her tail, making it hard for Marj to milk her and of course the tail was covered in green digested grass. Marj said “I will show you, you little shit”, so she got an elastic band and wrapped it tightly around - halfway up her tail. A few days later, Daisy’s tail was no longer a problem, it was only half as long. The bottom half had fallen off, problem solved.
Marj left home at 18 years of age and joined the work force. She worked at the Rose Valley Hospital in house cleaning for a couple years. In April 1959, Marj went to work at for the Katzman’s, who owned the Rose Valley Hotel, she was the nanny for their children. Marj was an excellent caregiver for her siblings, the Katzman children and later her own children as well as the neighborhood kids. It was while she was working for Katzman’s that she met Vernon Ray Hanson. They were married in Wadena, SK on March 18, 1961. Shortly after, they started their family. Debra, David, Donnella and 11 years later came Darrell were born to this union.
Marj loved to cook, bake, sew and spend time fishing with her grandchildren and Vern. They took many camping trips to Tobin Lake and Deschambault Lake and for several years they hooked up the camper and headed west to enjoy camping, picking fresh fruit and visiting with Barbara and Rueben. They made many memories on their BC trips. Marj’s biggest passions were her yard and garden. She had the most beautiful yard and bountiful gardens. Marj could be found anytime of the day, right up until dark, out in the yard as well as looking after their day-to-day living with the children while Vern was away at work.
Marj enjoyed playing softball, slow pitch, broomball and curling. She was a fierce competitor, it didn’t matter who stood in her way, if there was a will she found a way, even if it meant running the first base person into the dirt. Marj competed and was a champion Squaw Wrestler, Log Sawer, Toboggan Racer and Nail Pounder at the Winter Festival in Rose Valley for many years as well as winning first prize for her Chiffon cakes. She was an avid sports fan, Montreal Canadians being her favorite hockey team. She may have brainwashed a few of her grandchildren into being Habs Fans as well. You could often find her up in the middle of the night watching the Olympics or World Curling depending on where it was held.
Marj had ambition and talent second to none. She was the fiercest and proudest protector of her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marj is survived by her: daughter Deb (Alain) Quessy and grandchild Kaylee (PJ) great-grandchildren Austin and Kaydence, grandchild Amy (Scott) and great-grandchildren Paiton, Kabrie, Hudson and Rhonix, grandchild Dana (Blake) and great-grandchildren Sophie, Hadley, Harper and Skyler; son David (Sheri) and grandchild Brandi (Chad), grandchild Brayell (Jessie) Dengler and great-grandchildren Taze, Haven and Tatum, grandchild Brady (Jade) and great-grandchild Joleigh; daughter Donnella (John) Rachkewich and grandchild Jesika, grandchild Adam and great-granddaughter Bostyn and grandchild Zachery; son Darrell (Jackie) and grandson Briar; her siblings Barbara (Rueben) Contreras, Robert (Linda) Currie, Cecil (Mona) Currie, David (Bernice) Currie and Merle Hegg; sisters-in-law Norma Currie and Joyce Currie; brothers-in-law Brian Hutzelak; Mervin (Mavis) Hanson, Allan Hanson, Clayton Hanson, Duane Hanson, Leslie Hanson; sisters-in-law Colleen Leffler, Beverley Katchmar, Elaine Stendie, Mavis Hassel and Lanette Hanson and numerous, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and friends.
