Memorial Service 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2017 Wynyard United Church Wynyard, Saskatchewan Thor was born on the homestead by Little Quill Lake North of Mozart to Rosa and Thordur. He attended Little Quill School to grade 10 when he left to help on the family farm. He married Gwen Johnson on April 8, 1944. To support the farm and growing family he worked for the Wheat Pool and then the Mozart Co-op, eventually selling the farm when he became the manager. He retired after 27 years. Dad was very active in the Little Quill and Mozart communities, serving on several boards and committees. He enjoyed bird hunting, visiting with neighbours, playing bridge, playing ball with the famous Mozart Monarchs and was a regular at the curling rink where many “rockus” good times were had. They loved to golf, cross country and downhill ski, dance and were avid members of the Wynyard Whirlers learning to square dance, round dance and clog. They travelled many provinces, Alaska, Cuba, Greece, Hawaii and Iceland where he met several relatives. After they moved to Wynyard in 1997 Dad needed a hobby so he started making stained glass pieces. They became active members of the Wynyard United Church, Vatnabyggd Club and Wynyard Seniors Centre and loved spending time at Fishing Lake. Dad had a strong belief in the co-op movement, often saying “if you couldn’t get it at the co-op you didn’t need it”. He worked hard for the CCF/NDP, going to conventions, canvassing, etc. Dad cared passionately about family, friends, community, province and country and was always ready to help anyone who asked. Dad loved to have company whether in town or at the lake. He followed his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities with much enjoyment and pride. Thordur is survived by his wife of 73 years - Gwen; daughters Sharon Nupdal (Roger), Thora Arnason, Terry Arnason, sons Stefan (Caroline) and Murray (Sandy); sisters-in-law Kathleen Johnson, Fyola Lorenzen, Wilma Clark and brother-in-law Baldur Johnson; grandchildren Todd Nupdal (Margaret), Tara Bender (Randy), Thora Joynt (Kerry), Tryggvi Nupdal (Meghan), Michael Arnason (Amanda), Jennifer Arnason (Mike), Eric Arnason (Cherilyn), Jason Dubiel, Kayla Melsted (Ryan), and Beth Arnason; great grandchildren: Tyler and Tia Bender, Freyja Nupdal, Hannah and Gage Joynt, Emma and Nia Wiebe, Thor, Britta, Tryggvi, Tyr, Taave, Maya, Hunter Arnason, Dylan Peterson, Cooper and Oliver Melsted. Thordur was predeceased by his parents Thordur and Rosa; Gwen’s parents Barney and Beth Johnson; brothers Arni (Elizabeth), Tom (Gwen), Theodor; sisters Laura (Arnold) Van Ness, Olive (Bob) Casey, Thordis Card, Margaret (John) Walker; son-in-law Calvin Headley, brother-in-laws Raymond Johnson, Hank Lorenzen and Arthur Clark; sister-in-law Aimee Johnson. This kind and gentle man will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and friends as well.
