Obituary
In Loving Memory of Alexander Halyk Alexander Daniel Halyk was born on July 20th, 1937 at his family home in West Bend, Saskatch- ewan. He was the 6th child of 8 born to Theodore and Julia Halyk. He attended elementary school in the town hall in West Bend, and then Burke School in Yorkton for a time before moving with his family to Foam Lake. Alex graduated from Foam Lake Composite School in 1955, and worked in the oil patch in southeastern Saskatchewan for 2 years. In 1957 he built, owned and operated Halyk’s Tire Shop on Main St. which was next door to his dad’s International Harvester Dealership. In 1966 he met Cecile Nimegeers in Yorkton, who was teaching on staff with his sister Nettie. In July 1967 they were married in Weyburn, SK. They were blessed with 6 children, welcomed within 10 years: Daniel, Colette, Nevin, Denene, Martin and Andrea. In 1974 they built and operated Yellowhead Gulf on Highway 16 in Foam Lake. In 1981 they sold and then moved to the Halyk Block, which they renovated. They opened Pro Alignment, featuring state-of-the-art wheel alignment, auto repairs and parts. Later he added a radiator sales and repair department. In 2000, Alex scaled down the business to a parts outlet called Pro Auto Parts. He retired from active business in 2008 after 50 years of service to Foam Lake and area. He continued to work as manager, trouble shooter and consultant for Foamy’s Laundromat and the Halyk Block until his health became fragile at age 80. Alex and Cecile worked together managing their family business and raising their children. They enjoyed travelling and visiting their large extended families. Alex loved socializing, playing cards and was an avid reader. He had a keen interest in everyone, welcom- ing folks for coffee or an extended visit. The office at the shop was a popular stop for many coffee friends. Alex was an active member of the Catholic parishes of Holy Eucharist and later Christ the King in Foam Lake. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5970 and a faithful Knight, serving in many executive capacities for almost 60 years. Alex served as chairper- son of the Parish Council, was a lector and was a graduate of the 2-year Faith Enrichment Program through the Diocese of Saskatoon. Alex was a former volunteer firefighter with the Foam Lake Fire Department, served as Fire Chief and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce where he also served as President. He sat as a councillor for the Town of Foam Lake for a term, and is a 50 year member of the Foam Lake Elks. Alex volunteered on the Saskatchewan Housing Authority Board for 8 years and was a Venturer and Scout leader for many years. A memorable and enjoyable high- light of his parenting years were the ski and hiking trips with the Venturers throughout Saskatchewan. Alex and Cecile were very happy to have travelled to Europe, across North America and into the Caribbean. The greatest joy and pride of his life were his 6 children, 19 grandchildren and 3 great- grandchildren - he rejoiced with each new addition. Alex was an analytical and methodical man, a mechanic by trade. He would studiously read manuals and books, or later glean information from Youtube. Alex would tackle almost any plumbing or electrical project. He preferred working with wood, and throughout his married life he became a master carpenter. He tackled many renovations and made numerous gifts for his growing, beloved family. For the past two years, Alex’s health declined and he became a resident of the Jubilee Home, where he received excellent care.
