Obituary
In Loving Memory of Gladys Cawkwell Gladys Helen Cartwright was born to Edwin and Helena Cartwright March 3, 1929. She grew up on a farm near Nut Mountain with her parents, her brother Frank and sister Rita. Her father Edwin died in 1940 so life was not easy afterward. Gladys attended school at Omar and Nut Mountain schools and got her grade eleven in 1945. She moved to Winnipeg and found a job in a tuberculosis sanitarium. In 1947 she contracted tuberculosis and moved to Fort San to recover. Once she recovered she got a job at the Co-op store in Nut Mountain where she met Clarence Cawkwell. They were married on January 20, 1949 and were blessed with two children, Garry and Audrey. They lived and worked on their farm near Nut Mountain until 1956 when they took over the post office and moved into Nut Mountain. Gladys ran the post office and Clarence farmed from town. They were both very involved in the community, raising their children, curling, snowmobiling, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. Gladys took up golf, was a great seamstress and taught 4-H for many years. Clarence retired from farming in 1974 and got a job with crop insurance which enabled them to do a little traveling. In 1985 they sold the post office and moved to their cabin on the north shore of Fishing Lake. They spent the summers at the cabin and winters in British Columbia. In 1988 Gladys felt she wanted a more permanent home and they purchased a house in Kelvington. There, they acquired some wonderful friends and neighbours including the Comforts who became like family. Gladys got very involved in some community groups and projects including bringing the bowling alley to Kelvington. They curled, played bridge and loved golfing in the summer. She also enjoyed spending time with Stuart and Audrey and her grand children, and attended all of their games and achievements. They continued to travel to British Columbia once or twice a year to visit with Garry, Judy, Jodie and Ryan. Clarence passed away in 2010 and Gladys continued living in her house until December of 2017 when she moved into the Kelvindell Lodge. Gladys loved animals, especially cats and was very sad to leave her beloved old cat Pumpkin behind when she moved, but was very grateful to Taralene for adopting Pumpkin and giving her a good home. Pumpkin was with Taralene until November 2021 when she passed away at the age of about twenty-one. Gladys leaves to mourn her passing: her son, Garry (Judy) Cawkwell - children, Jodie Cawkwell, Ryan (Tori) Cawkwell and Luke; her daughter, Audrey (Stuart) Ziola - children Taralena Ziola, Garrett Ziola (Jeanette), Trenton (Angie) Ziola, Kellan and Weston; cousins, Gordon (Girlie) Ake, Ron Cartwright; sister-in-law Myrtle Donaldson and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
