Obituary
In Loving Memory of Vernon Opfergelt Vernon Opfergelt, and to many family members was lovingly called ‘Sonny'. Sonny died peacefully, surrounded by his family on January 2, 2022 in the Humboldt Hospital.Vernon was an active, outgoing 96 year old, living independently at Churchview in Naicam for the past 8 years. He enjoyed shuffleboard games and the senior activities while there. He was often seen driving his truck or off having coffee with friends. Vernon married Helga Collum in December of 1946. He was the eldest son of Walter and Eileen Opfergelt. He was born at home and was delivered by his future mother-in-law. Vernon and Helga had five children-Richard or Sam (Judy) from Tisdale; Bernice (Richard or Tex) from Canmore; Bryon from Grand Prairie; Donna (Dale) from Barrier Ford; Kevin (Kim) from Alameda. They were blessed with 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Vernon had five siblings — Lois (Johnny Schmitz), Jack (Mary), Phyllis (Neil Pineau), Audrey (Tony Hauser). We are fortunate to still have Uncle Jack and Aunt Audrey with us. These people taught us much about having fun and loving our extended family. There are many memories of family time at the lake, weddings and other celebrations. We all enjoyed our Opfergelt family reunions and loved time together. Vernon attended Hat Creek School and because of a diary, he let us read, we noted that many school days were missed, helping on the farm or cutting wood. No doubt, Dad and Jack had their share of mischief. Dad’s sisters, Audrey and Phyllis, often spoke about how they adored their big brothers. Again, that generation taught us so much about family. His sisters were always proud of him and pointed out his huge hands and his brilliant blue eyes. We all loved those hands! Dad and Uncle Jack spent a cold winter in the bush cutting wood. These two brothers were not afraid of hard work, only returning home once for three days at Christmas. Vernon farmed with Jack on land that their father bought after WW1. They worked hard clearing that land and making it their home, providing for their growing families. Vernon and Helga moved their family east of Naicam in 1967. He actively farmed until he was 80 years old. His love of the land continued as he grew bountiful gardens, he especially loved sharing his tomatoes. After nearly 60 years of marriage, Helga passed away in 2005. With limited domestic knowledge he adapted and managed his home. Dad loves life and being with others was very important to him. He spent several years with Iris and they enjoyed their time together. At 89 years old, Dad had his first hospital admission. Later in his ninety’s he had other health issues but faced them head on without many complaints. During his time at Churchview he developed a deep friendship with Lorraine, we welcomed her into our family and enjoyed seeing them together. They could dance! He loved curling, fishing, camping, hunting, dancing, music and living life! He had a natural ability to really listen and hear what others were saying. He always enjoyed a good debate. He was content with what he had - HE WAS LOVED.
