Metro Matt Stachyshyn was born on September 29, 1921, the eldest son of Walter and Nellie (Warsaba) Stachyshyn in Bedfortville, Saskatchewan in the Ituna district. He attended Bon Accord School until grade 8 then worked on the family farm till the age of 16. He went to work at a thrashing gang at Semens and various places for $1 a day for 3 years. In 1940 he got a job for Luzinski farms by Ituna harrowing, walking behind with a team of horses, getting $40 a month. In 1943 he was enrolled into the army and served there for 3 years including places such as Regina, Winnipeg, Prince Albert, Victoria, Nanaimo and Terra, British Columbia. He got a discharge and came back to the family farm. In 1947 he started to farm a 1/2 section of land north of Ituna. In 1966 he was united in marriage to Antonia Luchyshyn and they were one month away from celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were blessed with one daughter, Linda in 1967. Matt and Antonia grain farmed 3 quarters 21 miles south of Foam Lake, driving each day from the farm to their family home in Foam Lake. He found a part-time job painting and working as a janitor in the Foam Lake Jubilee Nursing Home. He retired from farming in 1981 and continued his part-time job until 1988. His daughter Linda was united in marriage on September 26, 1987 to Brian Beatty. He was blessed with 2 grandchildren, Allison, born in February 1994 and Matthew in September, 1999. After Matt’s retirement he enjoyed playing pool at the Senior’s Centre and going for coffee each day with his friends. He enjoyed going to church, visiting, playing 3-spot with their friends and spending time with his grandchildren on the weekends. Matt always greeted everyone with a smiling face and a big hello. He is predeceased by his parents Walter & Nellie, father & mother-in-law, Ludwig & Eva Luchyshyn, brother, Sam in infancy & brother-in-law Steven in infancy, brother Bill of Auckland, New Zealand, brother Pete of Edmonton, brothers Harry & John of Ituna and nephew Randy Grabatan of Saskatoon. He is survived by his loving wife Antonia, daughter Linda (Brian) Beatty of Regina, granddaughter Allison (Brandon) of Moose Jaw, grandson Matthew of Regina. Sisters Eva of B.C., Ann Stanbury & Mary Grabatan of Saskatoon, brothers Steve (Mary) of Humboldt, Alex (Diane) of Foam Lake, Mike of Edmonton & numerous nieces & nephews. In lieu of flowers anyone wishing to make a donation can be made to the Foam Lake Jubiliee Nursing Home Auxiliary.
