In Loving Memory
Ervin Braaten
August 16, 1936 - Februay 10, 2023
Ervin Ole Braaten was born August 16, 1936 at Rose Valley, Saskatchewan. He was the second son of three born to Arve and Sybil (Bjerland) Braaten. He lived on the farm, close to his grandparents and other aunts and uncles and attended West Shore School. The family continued farming until his Dad Arve bought a store in Rose Valley in 1958. He worked with his parents until 1966 when the store was sold; he then purchased land for farming with his Dad. S.E.29-38-13 became his home where he resided until September of 2022, when he moved into the Rose Valley Community Spirit Manor.
Ervin was a very community minded gentleman who assisted, chaired, and organized many things to improve his community.
In the winter, Ervin spent much of his time at the curling rink. Bonspiels were a major part of the winter for him. He helped coordinate the major repairs done to the Rose Valley Rink in 1977-1978. When he was not out “sweeping” he was out on his snowmobile with friends from the R.V. Snowmobile Club. He was also involved in the plans for building the new skating rink, of which opened in 1981. Ervin attended many games, especially when family were playing.
Ervin joined the Rose Valley Fire Department in 1981 and retired as Fire Chief in 1995. The summer saw Ervin at many local Sports Days. He was an avid fan of the Chuckwagon and Chariot Races. He was the best fan wherever his nephew Keith and Keith’s children – Blair, Brandee, Riley and Brianne were competing when it came to the races. He was a major part of the Rose Valley Sports Day organization and also the R.V. Rodeo held in the skating arena from 1995 – 2007.
One of Ervin’s holiday highlights was attending the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas for four years with family and friends. On two of the occasions the Casino made his trip very exciting!
Ervin also worked for Shamrock Ambulance as a driver when it was first establihed in Rose Valley, SK
Ervin was predeceased by his: brother Norman (1968), father Arve (1974), mother Sybil (1989), brother Obert (2010) and great-nephew Travis (2020).
Ervin is survived by his: sister-in-law Phyllis; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Ervin left us to rejoin his immediate family in heaven on February 10, 2023 after a brief stay at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK.
"I'll Fly Away"
Some bright morning when this life is over
I'll fly away
To that home on God's celestial shore
I'll fly away
Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh glory
I'll fly away in the morning
When I die hallelujah by and by
I'll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly away
I'll fly away
Chorus:
Oh how glad and happy when we meet
I'll fly away
No more cold iron shackles on my feet
I'll fly away
Chorus:
Just a few more weary days and then
I'll fly away
To a land where joys will never end
I'll fly away
