Obituary

In Loving Memory of Elsie Paulson

Elsie Paulson was born to Alfred and Julianna Autet on July 28th, 1938 in Wakaw, SK. The tenth of twelve children, she grew up in Domremy, SK on the family farm.  In her early twenties, Elsie moved to Calgary, AB, to babysit for her sister, Lucille. While in Calgary, she met William Heimlick and shortly after, in 1963, they married and moved to Weyburn where they had two sons, Carey and Dwayne.

After Bill’s passing in 1968, she moved to Regina with her two boys to be closer to her family. During those years, she worked hard at multiple jobs to provide for herself and her kids. On her off time, she enjoyed spending time with family, particularly her sister, Lorraine, and treating her boys to Houston Pizza on Thursdays. One day, Elsie met Ernest Paulson who was visiting Regina with his friend, Harold Karapita. Smitten, Elsie and Ernie quickly developed a strong relationship, and it wasn’t long after, in 1974, that Elsie and her sons moved to Rose Valley to live on the farm.  Elsie and Ernie were married in November of that year and added two more children, Michele and David, to their family. Elsie quickly adapted to her new life on the farm where she became an excellent gardener, canner, cook, and much more. During seeding and harvest, she would prepare meals to be delivered to the men in the field.

Whether it was to see her or Ernie, Elsie’s door was always open to anyone who stopped by for a visit, and she would always have a pot of coffee ready to go. Elsie took pleasure in several hobbies that were enjoyed by all in her life. She was a talented quilter and seamstress, creating clothes and the most fantastic quilts that will be treasured by her family for years to come. She baked the most delicious bread and would send some home with her kids whenever they came to visit. She also loved to go fishing with Ernie whenever they could. “Fishy, fishy in the brookie, come and bite my hookie” was a common refrain. And, when she had some downtime, you would often find her playing solitaire with cards that she had long since worn out.

As a member of the Rose Valley community, she volunteered her time as a member of the Kinettes and the Roman Catholic Ladies Aid. Elsie was also a proud member of the Mallard Wildlife Federation in Rose Valley where she and her family volunteered at the annual fish fry. She made many good friends over the years and treasured her time spent with them over a tea or coffee in town.

Elsie was a family-first woman and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She never had any issues telling you what to do and how to do it, but it always came from a good place. A stubborn and lovely woman with a huge heart, contagious laugh, and sweet smile, her family and friends will remember her fondly in their memories.

Left to cherish her memory are her:  children - son Carey Heimlick of Rose Valley, his children Bryce, Derek, Cali, Colby, and Haley, and his grandchildren Krystyn, Carter and Lincoln; son Dwayne Heimlick (Patti) of Regina, their children Jordan, Alexandra (Simon), Jarek, and Kasia; daughter Michele Paulson (Mike) of Rose Valley, and their child Raelynn; and son David Paulson (Tanya) of Rose Valley, their children Whyatt, Hailey, Lucas and Jesse, and their grandchild Vincent. As well as sisters-in-law’s Maureen, Cecile, and Barb, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.

Elsie joins her husband, Ernie (2015); her parents, Alfred and Julianna; all eleven of her brothers and sisters, Margaret Autet, Celeste “Sally” Burechailo, Marcel Autet, John Autet, Roger Autet, Ken Autet, Marie Moniuk, Hermine “Babe” Burechailo, Lucille Toner, Dennis Autet, and Lorraine Autet and well as her first husband Bill Heimlick.
