She was their first born child followed by 12 other siblings. They lived and grew up in the Halicz School District. Mary attended school to grade 6. It was when Mary was 18 that she met her beloved husband Matt at one of the many dances. They were married Oct. 11, 1936 at Krasne Church. They moved to Matt's parents Maria and John Antonuik's family farm a mile east of Krasne Church. Mom worked hard side by side with dad on their small farm. Aside from tending to household duties, raising her children and growing an abundant garden she would help dad with the farm chores and the harvest; she would drive the tractor while dad would be on the binder. She recalled some scary moments and this gave her the confidence to obtain her driver's license. In 1958 mom and dad moved into Wynyard to try their hand in business purchasing the Wynyard Pool Hall. She baked many a pie and tart for her customers. After a few years in business dad decided to go back to full time farming and it was at this time mom's artistic talents became evident. She became a proficient seamstress sewing many a gown, pant suit and even draperies. Mom accomplished the art of Ukrainian Easter egg decorating and every Easter there would be an array of newly designed eggs for the Easter table. Mom also became known for her beautiful wedding cakes, many of her designs were very intricate and delicate. In the spare moments she was known to knit or crochet for her family. Mom was an excellent cook and enjoyed trying out new recipes. Mom was a lady of deep faith in God, initially acquired from her parents and supported by her husband and son. There is no doubt that it was her deep faith that sustained her during the difficult times in her life, the sudden death of her beloved husband, the loss of her daughter Elizabeth, granddaughter Carolee and her only beloved son Melvin. Mom has been an avid supporter of the Krasne and Wynyard Ukrainian Catholic Churches in her lifetime. She very rarely missed a Sunday Mass. Mom was a proud member of the UCWL, was always a willing helper at church functions, and faithfully attended Golden Acres every Thursday to pray the rosary with the residents. Mom was a member of the Seniors Centre and enjoyed the Wednesday night 3-spot games and the companionship at the centre. As well mom enjoyed meeting friends for a coffee at "The Bakery", not to mention following the "Rider Games" on T.V. dressed with her green beads and green shirt. Mom enjoyed keeping up with the times, the News, fashion, and listening to talk shows on the Christian Channel. Mom loved her home, she loved her Town of Wynyard saying it was "the best place on earth to live". Mom was totally blessed with good health into her mid-nineties, a good loving husband, 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Her legacy is her family and her faith - and to her family she was the glue that holds all together - her devotion to her faith and family is imprinted on our hearts and her generosity to us and her friends was much to behold. You did not leave her house without a jar of pickles or jam or perogies or a $20 bill. Mom "rest in peace" and we know you are "Home Sweet Home" (her last discernable words). We love you, we will miss you dearly and please continue to watch over all of us. *** Your family***
