Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Olive Grace Eccles announces her passing on January 26, 2017. Olive was born to Herbert and Elizabeth Champion on September 11, 1923 in Paddington Central, County of London, England. She was raised and received her education at Edgware Middlesex. After completing her schooling Olive worked in a factory until she enlisted in the British Army as a member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service where she attained the rank of Sergeant. At a dance for members of the Armed Services Olive met Herbert Eccles, a Canadian soldier serving in England. They each continued on with their duties in the army then Bert and Olive were married at St. Laurence Church, Whitchurch, England on December 8, 1946. On April 4, 1947 they sailed across the Atlantic to Canada on the Acquitania and then across Canada by train from Halifax to Wynyard. Bert and his “English War Bride” started a mixed farming operation south of Wynyard. It was on this farm that they raised their five children. Olive accepted the challenge of farm life and she had to adapt to a new way of life in a new country. She worked very hard alongside Bert to make the farm a success. She always tended to a large garden, canning or freezing the bountiful produce. She was very generous in sharing the produce with others. She became a fabulous cook and baker and she was especially noted for her home made pies, bread and buns. Olive’s grandchildren often speak of Grandma’s wonderful meals. One never left hungry from their visit to the farm. Olive had a tremendous amount of energy and she was a gifted athlete in her younger years especially in swimming. She was an avid reader and she was interested in many subjects. She always kept up with current affairs. She enjoyed travelling, especially the trips she took back to England to visit her family and other relatives. Olive had a great sense of humour and she loved to tease. There wasn’t a task that she didn’t attempt to accomplish and she was never afraid of a challenge. Olive was a capable, determined and independent person. She served as a Second Lieutenant in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Cadet instructor. She was the first female officer with the Wynyard Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron #568. She served the squadron from 1973-1979 and through her service female cadets were allowed to enter the air cadet movement in Wynyard. Olive was a long time member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and later the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #101 in Wynyard. Through the years she held various positions on the executive of the Auxiliary. Olive was kind, caring, generous and a hard worker. She was always able to make the best of every situation gaining much strength from her faith in God. Olive’s life was spent being deeply devoted to her husband and raising their children. She always supported and encouraged her family in their endeavors. She took great pride and joy in all of her family’s accomplishments. She lived her life for her family and her love for them never failed. Olive leaves behind her children and their spouses Carol (Ray) Bichon, Saskatoon; Angela (Doug) Beaumont, Saskatoon; Wendy (Alvin) Cherneski, Kamloops, B.C.; Brian (Myrna) Eccles, Wynyard; and Jackie (Tim) Hordos, Wynyard. She will be remembered by her grandchildren Kevin Bichon, Colette (Bill) Delainey, Kelvin Beaumont (Shannon Blum), Yvonne Cherneski (Rodger DeChamplain), Nicole Cherneski (Tawd Hamonic), Brandon Eccles, Ashley Eccles (Lindsay Kostyk), Amanda (Justin) Dieno, Dustyn (Amanda) Hordos. Olive will be remembered by her sister-in-law Joan deRoy in England, Herbert’s siblings Alice Kowalyk, Wynyard and Ken (Elsie) Eccles, Abbotsford, B.C. Olive was predeceased by her parents, her eleven siblings, and her husband Herbert who passed away in 2001. We will always love her and miss her dearly.
