Celebrating the Life of Grace Rachkewich

Grace Kathleen (Bonk) Rachkewich was born May 28, 1938 at Dauphin Hospital. She was the middle child born to Jean & Joseph Bonk of Dauphin, MB. Grace grew up on the farm and attended school in Dauphin until she moved to Winnipeg where she went to school and became a secretary. Grace then moved out west to Calgary where she was employed as a secretary in the oil industry. Grace was a people person, she was kind and could strike up a conversation with anyone she met, which was a definite asset in her line of work. She was super organized and loved her typewriter which carried on throughout her life with her filing system at home. Grace would type letters, cards & notes and could often be heard plunking away on her old typewriter.

It was in Calgary she met her husband Walter (Wally) Rachkewich. After a blind date and a short courtship they were married on July 3, 1965 in Calgary. They were blessed with 2 sons, John & David. Grace held a special place in her heart for her boys. She made sure they knew their way around the kitchen. From the time the boys were little they liked to joke and prank Grace. Grace was a very kind and special person. She had a smile and a chat for everyone she met. To her family she was truly an earth angel and now has moved on to the role of guardian angel. If you were a part of her life you held a special place in her heart. Life took her to many different places where she quickly made friends and also gave her the roles of wife, mom, grandmother, and mother-in-law, which she lived with each day. Grace was blessed with 8 grandchildren, each of them was a special gift to her and she was the proudest grandma ever. After Wally’s passing Scotty became Grace’s co-pilot and best buddy. She would load him up and they would hit the road to wherever the road took them.

Grace was a hotel owner in Arborfield & Rose Valley where she was very active in the communities. She was on the Economic Development Committee and a key player in getting a trade show organized in Rose Valley. Grace was on the Community Futures Board in Tisdale and an active member of the Curling Club.

Grace was predeceased by her husband Wally, her parents: Jean & Joseph Bonk, her brother Clarence Bonk, her in laws: Mary & John Rachkewich, 3 brothers-in-law: Mike, Harry and Peter Rachkewich all of Chelan. Sisters-in-law: Mary Makuch of Weekes, Ann Rachkewich of Ninetter, MB, Stellan Rachkewich of Calgary, Ellen Kennedy of Meadow Lake, Pauline Selody of Kelowna, BC and Judy Hudson of Rocky Mountain House, AB; brothers-in-law Bill Makuch, Joe Kennedy, Phil Selody and Al Hudson.

Grace is survived by her loving sons: John (Donnella) and David (Ivy) and her grandchildren: Jesika, Adam, Zachery, Tysen, Madison, Marley, Dylan & Micheala, several nieces & nephews, cousins, neighbors & friends. And her faithful buddy & co-pilot Scotty, who has joined the paw patrol at John & Donnella’s house.

Grace will be missed by her family and all who were lucky enough to have had her in their lives.
