Obituary

In Loving Memory of Marion Jesmer

Marion Elva Turnbull was born August 25th, 1941 at Wadena Hospital to John and Elva Turnbull. She passed away on February 9th, 2024 at Pleasant View Care Home in Wadena at the age of 82.

She was the youngest of 4 children; siblings Irene, Jimmy and Mark. She grew up in Paswegin where her parents ran the Post Office out of their home for 25 years. She talked of good memories growing up in a small community living in the Post Office, which was the hub of the action. Her sister Irene was 15 years older than her. Her brother Jimmy died at age two, before Marion was born. Therefore, most of her childhood stories were of her and Mark, who was 5 years older than her. When there was the opportunity, Mark and Marion would be sent to pick up the mail from the train and bring it to the post office for sorting. They were each paid a quarter for this job. In her story, Mark would bully her to obtain her quarter. Once she swallowed the quarter to prevent him from getting it, which caused quite a commotion!

She attended school in Paswegin and completed her grade 12 in Wadena. Graduating in 1959. After high school, she attended the Regina Academy of Laboratory Technology and received her diploma in 1961. She worked for several years at the Regina General Hospital and also the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

In 1971 she married David Jesmer and moved back to the Paswegin area. They had one daughter, Joanne (1973). Marion enjoyed being close to family again and jumped back into the community playing fastball in the summer and curling in the winter.

In the late 80’s she returned to the workforce. She became employed at ShopRite as a store clerk and enjoyed returning to work and socializing. She quickly made friendships and her coworkers became like another family to her. In 2001 the store was lost in a fire. She then moved down the street to the Co-op grocery store, where she worked until retirement.

She kicked off her retirement with a bus trip through Eastern Canada with friends. Over the years she enjoyed travelling to several places with friends and family including Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica, New York, and Yuma.A highlight was a trip to Scotland in 2018, with family. Her father was born in Scotland and lived there until he was 11 years old.

Marion enjoyed all sports. Particularly curling and golf. She was quick to welcome anyone new to the community or anyone who hadn’t tried curling or golf to come out and try it. Organizing equipment for them to use and providing informal passive instructions and coaching. Her love for sports was a vehicle for her to connect with people who became her lifelong friends. She was quietly competitive. Very willing to participate in any curling rink pranks or shenanigans.

Marion was predeceased by her parents: John and Elva; brother Jimmy; sister Irene; brother Mark; brother-in-law Charlie; sister-in-law Jean; and great nephew Tyson.

Marion is survived by her daughter Joanne, son-in-law Lonnie, grandson Jesse and granddaughter Reese.
