Obituary
Edmund Frank Staszczak was born on October 7, 1937 in Wadena Hospital to Mr. Stanley and Mrs. Katherine Staszczak, the eldest of five chidren. At an early age, Edmund has a deep curiosity about every aspect of life on the farm. His father, our grandfather, always said that Dad could be found poking around the grain binders, horse harnesses, cream seperators and other farm machines of that time. Finding all the birds nests in the spring and monitoring their progress was an especially important task to Edmund as a boy, and war was declared on any man or beast that harmed a robin nest in the farm yard. Dad began elementary school at Orpington School, four miles away, walking to school, and later, taking the horse and buggy or sleigh in the winter. High School was started in Fosston, and finished, at Kelvington. Dad told us he wasn’t an “A+” student, and soon the world away from the farm called. In 1957, Edmund went to Kitimat, B.C., working at a large grocery store for a year. This was a culture shock for Dad going from a quiet farm life to bustling factory town. The Mountains weren't for dad so he returned to Saskatchewan a year later, and delivered fuel for Margo Co-op for two years. Dad told us this was his favourite job away from the farm. He became good friends with many customers on his delivery runs around Margo. Farming was always calling to Dad. In the 1960’s, Dad returned home and began his farming career in earnest, farming with his parents, and later, with his brother Bernard. More land was purchased, the cattle herd expanded, and Dad began driving School bus from home to Kelvington. This was a valuable source of extra income and a source of extra aggravation, too. To whomever it was that filled Dad’s school bus with straw bales as a Halloween prank all those years ago, Dad figured out who you were. He just ran out of time for revenge. In 1967, while looking for a haircut in Wynyard, Edmund met Norma Kowalyk. They fell in love and were married on November 9, 1968. Two children soon followed. Mitchell in 1970 and Judy in 1978. Dad and Mom were proud that their children were able to obtain university educations and were interested in returning to their farm and continuing the work they started. Edmund was a long time member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Parish, in Fosston. He served on Parish council many times, and his Catholic faith was an important part of his and our family’s life. Dad was proud of his Polish heritage. Polish was the first language he spoke, and at the end of his life, after dementia had robbed him of so much, it was his last. Dad was a passionate Toronto Maple Leafs fan. During fall and winter, all work stopped in the middle of Saturday afternoon, first of all, to get ready for Hockey Night in Canada, and later, for Mass, on Sunday morning. If the team would have only taken Dad’s armchair hockey advice, they would have been Stanley Cup Champions every year. Dad was a quiet and humble man, slow to anger, and quick to offer comfort or help. In our family, Dad was the early riser, and mom was the night owl and somehow, they made it all work. Edmund and Norma lived on their farm for most of their lives, semi-retiring in the late 2000’s. In 2015, Norma passed away, and this added to Dad’s declining health. Dementia was making it difficult for Dad to look after himself and for his children to care for him. He moved to Golden Acres Care Home in Wynyard, in 2016, and later, to Pleasantview Care Home in Wadena, in 2018. Dementia took so many of Dad’s memories and abilities away, yet we hope, thoughts of his family, the farm, and his faith remained. Edmund passed away quietly, on the afternoon of August 4, 2018, with his children at his bedside. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Norma; parents, Stanley and Kate; nephew, Michael. Edmund is survived by his children: son, Mitchell and daughter, Judy; siblings, Helen (Douglas) Meachem, Zbygnief (Donna), Barbara (Richard) Yakimak, Bernard (Cherry); brothers-in-law, Joe (Meryl) Wasylynka, Daniel Kowalyk; sisters-in-law, Diane (Gary) Hilderman, Charlotte (Ken) Prior and many nephews, and nieces. Donations in memory of Edmund may be made to the Mary Queen of Poland Roman Catholic Cemetery, PO Box 64, Fosston, SK S0E 0V0, CNIB, Pleasantview Care Home Auxiliary, Wadena, SK, or Golden Acres Auxiliary, Wynyard, SK.
