Obituary of Netty Bulych
In Loving Memory Of Netty Bulych
Netty Darlene Bulych (Boychuk) was born on September 3, 1928, in the small town of Cudworth, Saskatchewan, to John and Mary Boychuk. Netty had an older sister, Anne, and a younger brother, Ben. John and Mary had a mixed farm, and life was full of chores, looking after the animals and tending to the garden. All the children completed their assigned tasks on the farm. Netty excelled at school in Cudworth, skipping a grade, and continued her education at the Saskatoon Normal School for teacher training. Netty was assigned to teach at a one-room, eight-grade rural school south of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. After teaching at Winthorpe School, Netty transferred to Hazel School. In 1947, Netty met a handsome young man, Michael James Bulych, in Foam Lake. They became engaged and married on May 22, 1949. They had two wonderful children, James Mitchell and Diana Joan. Netty was proud of her children and their many accomplishments throughout her life. In 1960, Netty transferred her teaching position to Foam Lake, where she taught grades five and six. In 1964, Netty became the Unit Librarian, working out of the Unit School Division Office. She traveled to all the schools in rural towns to keep their libraries updated with resources and reading materials. Netty managed the budget for library books for the entire Unit of Schools. Netty loved visiting classrooms to read to the students, which required extensive travel. She also helped new teachers with their organization and lesson planning. When the School Board consolidated the rural town classrooms into Foam Lake School, Netty returned to teaching grades seven and eight while acting as the librarian for the school. As the high school grew with rural students being bused into Foam Lake, Netty became the high school librarian. Netty loved teaching and took her role as an educator seriously. She worked hard to ensure her students learned and enjoyed the subjects she taught. She valued her students' unique personalities and individual strengths while holding them to high standards. Netty emphasized the importance of cursive writing and had beautiful penmanship herself. She also encouraged students to use resources to deepen their understanding of topics and explore their interests. Netty was vocal about education cuts, strongly opposing any reductions. She often said, "The education of today’s children shapes our future generations and leaders. We must give them the best education possible." One of Netty's lifelong goals was to complete her Bachelor of Education degree. She attended summer school and took correspondence classes to achieve this. In 1973, Netty fulfilled her goal and graduated with her B.Ed. Prime Minister John Diefenbaker personally handed her degree at the Convocation Stage in Saskatoon. This was a wonderful moment that she shared with her daughter Joan, who graduated alongside her. In 2023, Netty proudly received her University of Saskatchewan Golden Graduate Certificate in recognition of her graduation 50 years ago.
Netty retired from the Shamrock School Division on June 30, 1983. After retiring, she enjoyed her small Mary Kay sales business. Netty was also a proud member of the Canadian Royal Purple Society Lodge in Foam Lake. Netty enjoyed planting and tending to her flower garden and vegetable garden. While her husband, Mike, did all the heavy work, Netty enjoyed the lighter tasks of weeding and watering. Netty had a deep love for sports and participated both recreationally and competitively. She enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, bike riding, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing. She also enjoyed bowling and curling. One of Netty’s greatest joys was following her seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their athletic, dance, and musical endeavors. Many days were spent in arenas watching figure skating and hockey. There were also many days spent watching baseball, fastball, and football. Netty also loved to attend the theatre to watch dance. Watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren excel in their activities brought her immense happiness. Netty and her husband, Mike, traveled extensively, exploring Canada, the United States, the Caribbean Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, Cuba, and Mexico. She found history, geography, scenery, and landmarks fascinating. Netty will forever be loved and missed by her children, Joan and Jim (Delores). She was blessed with her grandchildren: Jeffrey, Ashley (Patrice), Bradley; Jason (Tricia), Curtis (Debbie), Travis, and Kristen (James). She was also blessed with her great-grandchildren: Jace (Jeffrey’s son) and Anastasia (Ashley’s daughter); Kaleb, Aiden (Daryn), Matlyn, and Anna (Jason’s children); Kaedan (Logan) and Ryder (Ali) (Jason's stepchildren); Matthew (Curtis’s stepson); and Bauer and Olivia (Kristen’s children). Netty was predeceased by her husband, Michael James Bulych; her parents, John and Mary; her sister, Anne; and her brother, Ben. She was also predeceased by her father-in-law, John; mother-in-law, Parania; sisters-in-law, Katie (John), Mary (John), and Phyllis (Dave); and brother-in-law, John. She was predeceased by her nieces: Lesia Sherwin, Jo-Ann Bell, and Leta Bell; and nephews: Norman Vrable, Bobbie Dewar, and Don Bulych.
