Obituary of Ruth Elliott

In Loving Memory Of Ruth Elliott

Eybjorg Ruth Magnusson was born July 14, 1936 to Magnus August and Gudrun Magnusson in Churchbridge, SK. Eybjorg is a one of a kind Icelandic name, as she was named for both of her maternal grandparents, Eyolfur and Ingibjorg Hinriksson; a special combination of their first names. She always was called by her middle name “Ruth”.  Ruth was the youngest of four children born into the Magnusson family. She was always affectionately referred to, as the baby of the family.

Ruth loved the family farm. Those were happy memories for her and she spoke of them often throughout her lifetime. Ruth had a great love of animals at an early age - dogs, cats, even all of the livestock. She has always had a very caring nature about her.

Ruth’s schooling, in the early years, was in the local district schools and then around the age of twelve, Ruth moved into Churchbridge, SK and lived  with her Aunt Villa to continue her education. She always said her career choices at that time were teacher, secretary or a nurse. Ruth followed her heart and became a Registered Nurse. What a wise choice as she was one of the best! Ruth completed her first year of nursing school in Regina, SK. She then completed her nursing program in Yorkton graduating in 1958. Kindness and compassion were definitely Ruth’s strengths and that showed in her schooling as well. She excelled in her studies and had great achievements. Ruth was awarded with the ‘Devotion to Duty’ medal as well as one for ‘Obstetrical Technique’. Her parents and siblings were extremely proud of her accomplishments!Ruth’s nursing career began at Fort San, the tuberculosis sanatorium near Fort Qu’Appelle, SK. She then traveled to Wadena by train to take a position at the Wadena Union Hospital, in Wadena, SK.  Ruth always said her plan was to only be in Wadena for six months. But fate had other plans, and Ruth met the man she would spend the next 50+ years with that very day she stepped off the train. Right at the station she met Victor Elliott. The rest is history!

Ruth and Victor moved to Manitoba for a short period when Vic was working in construction. While there, Ruth found work nursing in a mining company hospital. They moved back to Wadena and were wed on November 12, 1960. Along came the children, five daughters were born to complete the Elliott family. Maureen Ruth (1961), Della Victoria (1962), Shannon Marie (1965), Jacqueline Rae (1967), and Tammy Bridget (1973).

Ruth continued to work at Wadena Union Hospital until 1976 when she took a part time nursing position at Weneeda Park Lodge, a long-term care facility at that time. When the new facility, Pleasant View Care Home opened in 1989, Ruth moved there and continued nursing. Her final working years were with Wadena Home Care, until her retirement in 2001. Ruth loved working as a field nurse with Home Care and her clients appreciated her knowledge and kind heart.  She made a lot of miles through all kinds of weather. Ruth would never leave her clients without the care they needed.  She was committed to career and ensured excellent care for her patients.

Ruth and Victor were blessed with 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Ruth’s oldest grandchild lovingly gave her the name she was most proud of, Nan. Nan’s house was a special place for all the grandkids, especially at Christmas. So many beautiful memories were  made there. Ruth lost Victor in April of 2010, she missed him greatly. In time, she found herself a little furry friend to help her through those dark and lonely days. Pixie, her little dog moved in with her October 2010 and was with her ever since! Ruth remained living in her and Victor’s family home, with Pixie, she was content and happy, until just a few days before her passing.

Ruth’s final days found her in the excellent care of the staff at Wadena Hospital.

Ruth was constantly surrounded by her family during this time. She loved seeing all the grandkids who were able to travel home but for those who couldn’t, she knew they had her in their thoughts and prayers. Ruth’s girls, brought her nursing cap to the hospital and one evening she wore the cap with pride. The entire nursing staff from that day came down to her room to admire it. She was so happy to wear that cap one last time, and in the place she loved to care for others. Ruth passed away peacefully the morning of Tuesday, December 10th with all of her five daughters, at her bedside. Ruth was an angel here on earth and now an angel in Heaven, reunited with the love of her life, Victor.
