Obituary of Helga Helberg
Celebrating The Life Of Helga Helberg
Helga Kristbjorg Olafson was born in Leslie, Saskatchewan on October 1, 1935 to Gudmunder and Sigridur (Steinberg) Olafson. Helga was the older sister to Marian (Beretti). Helga was extremely proud to be born and raised in Leslie and often spoke fondly of her memories growing up in this small town and the many trips out to Leslie Beach. She attended Leslie School until grade 10 and then by her own conviction claimed she was “too smart for school”.
Helga met Edwin Helberg while he was working for the Department of Highways and was building a highway from Leslie to Foam Lake, and he asked her on a date. On May 22, 1955 Helga and Ed were married at the United Church, in Leslie, SK and made their first home in Clair, SK followed by a brief period in Colonsay before settling in Wadena to raise their three boys.
Helga started working as a telephone switchboard operator in Wadena, Saskatchewan in 1953 and was very proud of her work in the telephone office; she frequently spoke of the ladies she worked with and made lifelong friends there. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the Ed Helberg & Sons Esso Bulk from 1967-1975; she helped Don and Diane at the Elfros Corner Service from 1976-1980; later on she worked at Jock’s Jewelry (Sears) for a number of years and as well as volunteering in the community and raising her family.
Helga and Edwin had 3 sons - Donald, Brian, and Elden. Helga attended hundreds of hockey games throughout the years, driving her sons and cheering them on. Helga spent lots of time outside. Folks around town often saw her on her daily walk over to the Esso/Husky for morning coffee and the newspaper.
Following the first additions of her many grandchildren, Helga was delighted to spend time at Buckhorn Bay with Don and his family. As her grandchildren and great grandchildren grew up, you could find Helga at all kinds of sporting events, hockey rinks, ball diamonds, and dance auditoriums, always with her quiet smile beaming with pride.
