Obituary of Rita Karakochuk
Remembering Our Cherished Wife, Mother, Baba & Friend
Rita Karakochuk
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, baba & friend Rita Karakochuk, who left this world peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Jan 10th, 2025.
Rita was born on Aug 7th, 1963, to Walter & Anne Romanow in Wynyard, Sk. She grew up alongside her siblings Marie, Elmer, Charles & Myles. She spent many days on their Turkey Ranch outside of Wynyard with her brother Myles chasing birds around the farm. She lost her dad Walter at a young age. A few years later she was lucky enough to move with her mom & Myles to the farm of her beloved stepfather Harry Bashutsky. At the age of 10, she met Sheila Karakochuk, who became her first friend when she moved to town. Sheila just happened to have a brother “Joe”. At 16, Rita and Joe started their love story which became a beautiful journey of 39 years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. She was the proud and loving mother of three children: Perry (Shauna), Melanie (Scott) & Karlee (Travis) who brought her immense joy and fulfillment.
As a Baba, Rita's heart swelled with pride for her grandchildren Tori, Nora, Brensyn, Sylvee, Declan and one precious grandchild on the way. She cherished each moment spent with them, creating lasting memories and showering them with affection.
While raising her children, Rita spent many years as a homemaker. She spent hours baking for the farmers market, where she was known for her famous ‘Jellyroll’. Rita taught her kids how to cook, bake and make many Ukrainian dishes such as perogies & cabbage rolls. She was so proud to share her talents. Rita also would babysit for local families. She enjoyed her time with the children she took in her care. In 1999 Rita started her career at Sarcan, where she worked until her health led her to be unable to work any longer.
Rita had a strong faith as well. She enjoyed many masses and events at Sacred Heart UK Catholic Church where she was able to visit with other parishioners. She especially loved the blessing of the baskets at Easter. This is one tradition she has passed down to her family to carry on with them. She also spent countless hours at the Wynyard Bakery having coffee with many friends and striking up conversations with anyone that came in. Another passion of Mom’s was playing 3 Spot. She loved playing with family and friends and was known to scoot to the Drop In Center to meet up with fellow card lovers. Mom loved Kinsmen radio bingo. She spent many Saturday evenings with Dad listening to the radio, dabbing her cards while Dad wrote down the numbers in case she missed a few.
Rita's life was a testament to strength and determination. She faced the challenges of Multiple Sclerosis for many years with incredible courage and grace, never allowing it to define her or diminish her spirit. Despite her health struggles, she remained a pillar of strength for her family, offering endless love and support.
Rita's legacy of love, courage and resilience will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Her family finds comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, free from pain and reunited with loved ones who have gone before her. She is now able to walk, dance, garden and do all the things she loved to do.
A celebration of Rita's life will be held on May 10th, 2025, at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and celebrate the remarkable woman she was.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Golden Acres Auxiliary in Rita's honor.
Rita's presence in our lives was a gift, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit and love will forever remain in our hearts. Rest easy “Girlfriend”
