Obituary
Memorial Service: Sunday, October 11, 2015 2:00 p.m. Unitarian Church, Wynyard, Saskatchewan. Donation's in memory of Gunni may be made to Lgberg Heimskringla 508 283 Portage Ave Winnipeg, Manitoba. R3B 2B5 Gunni was born in the Goodman farmhouse east of Wynyard, the third of nine children of Sigtryggur and Arnthrudur Goodman. The family farm became his life's work and here he brought his bride, Kristine Olafson, in 1948. They had chickens, pigs, dairy and beef cattle over the years, until reverting to grain only, which allowed Gunni more time for other activities. Gunni's schooling ended at Grade 8, but education did not stop there. He read constantly, bringing topics of interest for supper table discussion. Local short courses in plumbing and electrical provided new skills to complete much needed renovations to the farmhouse. A welding course proved invaluable to the farming operations. In his 40's he studied written Icelandic to increase his skill in the language of his childhood home, and in semi-retirement Gunni took up translation of Icelandic songs into English. The Vatnabyggđ Icelandic Choir and the Saga Singers of Edmonton have performed many of his translations. Gunni was a quiet humble man of many accomplishments. His fine carpentry skills produced beautifully finished work, still evident in the farmhouse. Over the years he constructed, seemingly from nothing, items as varied as a stonepicker, a row boat, and a fully equipped camper trailer. Gunni and Kristine were members of the Wynyard Whirlers Square Dance Club for many years, and at one time Gunni instructed beginner square dancing. They were skilled round dancers and took up clogging for a few years. The Goodman family were founding members of the "Icelandic" Unitarian Church in Wynyard and Gunni carried that on, completing extensive renovations to the church basement along with Carl Olafson. Gunni was fiercely proud of his Icelandic heritage. He and Kristine made two trips to Iceland which were highlights of his life. Gunni enjoyed music and had a fine bass voice which he lent to the Vatnabyggđ Icelandic Choir and other local groups. He directed the Vatnabyggđ Icelandic Choir for many years and enjoyed discovering new pieces for the choir to learn and perform. Gunni was always up for a family music evening singing and playing together. Gunni's interest in dance led to the formation of the Vatnabyggđ Icelandic Dancers, who performed Icelandic folk dance in costume for a number of years. Gunni was a man of few words, but words of value. He enjoyed endless arguments for the sake of argument with brother Oli. He had a special connection with each of his children: with Gloria it was our Icelandic heritage, with Carol it was his pride in her singing and songwriting abilities, with Melvin it was mechanics, machinery and the farm. He taught by example. Gunni was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Kristine, his brothers Palmi and Oli, and his sisters Dora Dennis, Lilia Zirk, Christine Williams, and Gerda St Louis. He is survived by his children Gloria Krenbrenk, Carol Gogol, and Melvin (Cindy), his brother Bill (Dorothy) of Trenton, Ontario and sister Thorey Blow of Winnipeg. Gunni was Afi to grandchildren Clinton, Curtis and Calvin (Susan) Krenbrenk, Karli Gogol, Chris (Laurie) Reetz and their sons Michael, Travis and Trevor, and Michelle (Bart) Siwy and their children Abby, Danika and Nikyrian, and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sunday Oct 11/15 at 2 pm at the Wynyard Unitarian Church. Memorial donations: Lgberg Heimskringla (Icelandic Newspaper) 508-283 Portage Ave Winnipeg MB R3B 2B5. The family would like to thank Dr Bia, the Foam Lake Home Care Staff, Doreen Johnson and the staff at Wan-Dor Inn for the excellent care that he has received; and many thanks for the cards, phone calls and expressions of condolence.
