Memorial Service 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 Wadena Community Legion Hall Wadena, Saskatchewan Everyone is welcome to stay for lunch & fellowship following the service. It was a lovely evening in wartime Regina when a beautiful young lady walked in to the posh Drake Hotel. As she boarded the elevator, she noticed a handsome young Airman get on too. They exchanged hellos and the she asked, "Where are you going, young man?" to which he replied “Wherever you’re going ma’am.” Three months later, they were married. Thus began a loving marriage, which lasted over 56 years. Mina Guloien, the young legal secretary, was born in Wadena and raised on a farm in the Westport area where she completed Grade 10 before finishing high school in Wadena. As a toddler of 18 months, she would entertain guests and her family with her singing. She played in her father’s orchestra before she could reach the piano pedals. Music was a main theme, which wove its way through Mina’s life… the other, of course was LOVE. She was the sixth child raised in a family of eight, and he and her two brothers, Edward and Howard – all being within a year of eachother – were constantly together and we’re sure, found much mischief to get into. After school, while singing in her brother Paul’s orchestra in Calgary, Mina went to business college, which she completed in Regina. After a short while in Humboldt, she returned to Regina where she was working when the chance meeting Hartley Graham occurred. When the war ended, Hartley was stationed in New Brunswick, where Mina worked as a legal secretary. They were on their way to B.C. to de-enlist when they stopped to visit her parents, Nels and Hazel (Perry) Guloien, near Wadena. Mr. Guloien was in the process of leaving the farm to go into the grocery business. He invited Mina and her new groom to go into business with him. They did so and continued in busiess until 2001. Mr Guloien passed away in 1965; and in 1976, their eldest daughter Ellen and her husband Howard came into the business until 2001. When they moved to Wadena, Mina and Hartley immersed themselves in the community. Mina was involved in the United Church, sang in the choir, was on the Legion Auxiliary, participated in Kinsmen activities, lead community choirs, made figure skating costumes, dance outfits, watched carnivals, recitals, hockey games, and became Wadena’s Welcome Ambassador, all the while raising four children and working in the store. If there was music involved, Mine would be at the center of it. Her leading of the entertainement at the 1987 Wadena Homecoming was an example of her ability and determination to do things right. In one note of condolence, the writer said that when they moved to Wadena, Mina welcomed them to town and continued to make them feel part of the community until they left some years later. Mina was predeceased by her beloved Hartley in 2001; her parents; her inlaws; James and Myrtle Graham; daughter-in-law, Sandra Graham; two siblings at birth; brothers, Paul (Marg), Edward (Beth), Howard (June), and James (Jim)(Joan); sisters; Kathryn (Bill) Gillanders and Ellen Mary (Pinky) Alex Burton; brother-in-law, Henry and Vern Sparks; three nephews, and two nieces.
