Funeral Mass: Monday, January 4, 2016 10:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at the Yorkton Regional Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer, Verna (Veronica) entered into eternal rest. Verna was born the 12th child to Michael and Catherine Dlugan (nee Popik) on April 28, 1952, at the Foam Lake hospital. She grew up on the farm, attending Gilbert, and West Bend elementary schools, completing her high school education at the Foam Lake High school. It was at the Foam Lake High school where she met the love of her life, Ken Monych. Verna began her working life in Wynyard employed at Crawfords Foods. While there she was asked to run as a contestant for the Wynyard Carnival Queen, Verna was crowned Wynyard's Carnival Queen on Feb. 20th, 1972. She was very proud and delighted of this accomplishment, her beautifull smile lit up the town of Wynyard throughout the whole day. After a short time, she moved to Yorkton with her now fiancèe and continued to work at Loco Mart grocery store where she worked for just over a year, moving back to Foam Lake and continued employment at various stores, until she found the job that she really loved, managing and selling ladies clothing. Verna worked proudly at Linda's Dress store until her illness. She was so happy to meet and help the many Ladies that entered the store. The doors were always open, be it after hours or on a weekend especially if there was a wedding or some other event in town. Verna loved her job she was proud of her ability to dress up the ladies who entered the store. Many of the ladies soon realized that she wouldn't let any purchase go by without her eyeful approval. If it didn't look good, or fit properly, you wouldn't be buying it. She had a talent in being able to know the ladies size and what would look good on them. She was determined to get through this, her illness a small obstacle in her life and get back to what she so truly loved to do, but the Good Lord had other plans, he was looking for a beautiful Angel. Verna was united in marriage to Ken (Kenneth Monych) on June 02, 1973, at Model Farm Ukrainian Catholic Church in the West Bend district. Ken and Verna started their life journey in Yorkton, later moved to Foam Lake, and have remained there happily married for the past 42 years. Together they were blessed with two children, Darren and Kevin. Verna & Ken had the opportunity to travel to Germany, France, England, Niagara Falls, United States, Vancouver, along with many trips to Calgary and area. She also enjoyed numerous Sunday drives throughout the seasons, stopping in and visiting small town shops as there was always something waiting to be bought. She loved too shop! Verna also enjoyed visiting the resting places of family and friends, offering them a spot of wine or dash of beer, these were especially dear to her heart when her sister-in-law, and best friend was with her – Marlene, Verna talked about these trips until her last moments. Verna' greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren, they meant everything in the world to her. She loved getting pictures and sharing them with anyone around her, her eyes would light up with joy and the infectious smile would go on forever. She truly loved the last few years when trips were made to see the grandkids, or when they came down to visit, these were extra special. She also had a special place in her heart for all the nieces and nephews, she was always interested in how they were doing and when they had children of their own she always made room in her heart for them. She had so much love to give. Verna loved to be at work amongst people at whichever employment it was. Away from work, you would find her busy in the flower garden or tending to the vegetable crop which was always bountiful. She loved being outside, if not in the garden you could always find her attending to yard work, if not outside, she would be cleaning house, as everything had to be neat and tidy. She loved company, always wanting too talk with people about their families, and events over a cup of coffee, tea, or an afternoon glass of wine or two. Verna’s laughter, and humour will be missed at the next homebrewed wine making, and tasting with Eugenia. Verna loved to bake, especially around Christmas time as this was her favorite time of the year, she always made sure the freezer was full of baked goodies, and if not baking there was perogies, cabbage rolls and everything else that needed. She always kept the boys deep freezers stocked as well.
