Johanna Schindel was born on November 14, 1921 in Scharosch/Forgarasch, Romania to parents, Andreas and Sofia Schuster. She was the fourth of five children. Living in Germany in wartime she was taken to a prison work camp in Russia where she worked in harsh conditions on threshing crews, on the railway and in a coal mine. Upon her release she worked as a secretary at a radio factory in Berlin. In 1956 she answered an ad to do housekeeping for a Canadian farmer in the hope of a better life for herself and her 6-year-old son, Bernard and ventured off to Lintlaw, Saskatchewan. She married Robert Schindel her employer on February 5th, 1957. Together they had one son, Robert Jr. and she farmed with her husband on the family homestead south of Lintlaw until 1985 when they moved to the town of Lintlaw. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time babysitting her granddaughters and occasionally the children of local working moms. Becoming unable to care for herself she first of all moved in with son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Polly, who were on the Schindel farm, and then to Rose Valley Manor in 2003 and to Kelvindell Lodge in 2006. She enjoyed her years in the care homes visiting with staff and residents and taking part in the many activities provided including singing and dancing. She passed away at the Lodge on February 20, 2014 after a short illness. Johanna was predeceased by her husband in 1990 and her parents and siblings: Andreas, Sofia, Maria and Johann all who remained in Europe. She is survived by her son Bernard and his daughters Dana and Jacqueline and son Robert (Polly), and his daughters Stephanie (Jesse) Bastain, Meissa (Yann) Fitzmorris, and Bobbie (Dustin) Crawford and grandchildren Madeline, Ayden, Liam, Ezra, Tygra and Jonnie as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A family memorial will take place in the summer.
