Obituary
Ernest Robert Donald was born on January 31, 1929 in a sleigh box on the way into Kelvington. He was the first son of Samuel and Caroline (Koch) Donald and was called Ernie right from the start. In his childhood, he attended Brand school and later worked for farmers in the area and as a cowboy for Carl Peters. Ernie moved to Flin Flon where he worked at the mine and it was here that he married Eileen Naff who was also from the Kelvington area on May 9, 1953. Their first son Glenn was born while they were living in Flin Flon. In 1955, Ernie and Eileen moved back to the Kelvington area where they farmed for thirteen years; it was here that their son Brian and daughter Carol were born. Many memories of Meadow Bank picnics, dances and friends were made during this time. In 1969, the land was rented out and the family moved to the Kylemore area where Ernie was employed as the Manager of the F & B Feedlot for the next ten years. In 1977, they moved to Wadena where Ernie worked with the Pioneer Elevator construction crew that travelled and worked in many areas of Saskatchewan. There weren’t many grid roads around the province that Ernie wasn’t familiar with. In 1985, Ernie and Glenn built a new home in Wadena for Ernie and Eileen. This led to a construction and concrete business where Ernie and Glenn built other homes in the Wadena area and later farming with both Glenn and Brian. As a family, they enjoyed travelling to visit his siblings and their families in Weyburn, Swift Current, Saskatoon and Cranbrook. Ernie was also very busy in any of the activities that Glenn, Brian and Carol were involved in. This included 4-H as a parent and a leader, hockey, curling and ball. This same devotion was later shown to his grandchildren Nicole, Chris, Derek and Kale where you would see his face light up the room anytime he saw them. On August 2, 1988, Ernie’s world was forever changed when his loving wife Eileen passed away suddenly. Over the years, he was a member of the Legion, an avid hockey, ball and curling fan and loved to play cards or crib, curl, listen to music and dance. He is remembered for his kind soul, big smile, his teasing and his love for his family. He would often come out to the lake when we were all there and just sit with a big grin on his face listening to his grandchildren’s stories. Ernie met Phyllis Arnason and they would spend some happy years together until Phyllis moved to the Golden Acres in Wynyard because of her health. Ernie was devoted to taking her back to the farm on weekends or outings for ice cream and coffee. Ernie moved to the Weneeda Park Lodge in October 2016 and this would be his last fall of farming. He passed away on December 28, 2018 after a brief illness at the young age of 89. We thank God for his life and the blessing of the time we had with him. Ernie was predeceased by his loving wife Eileen; children Glenn, Brian and Carol; parents Sam and Caroline Donald; father and mother-in-law Leonard and Lydia (Berglund) Naff; brother Marvin Donald; sister Marj Illerbrun; brothers-in-law Don Illerbrun; Evert Stahl; Albert Naff; Laurence Naff; Jack Hoare; sisters-in-law Lily Stahl; Ethel Hoare; Alice Senyk; Gerda Goodyer; and Evelyn Naff.
