Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2016 Foam Lake United Church Foam Lake, Saskatchewan Irene Fushtey was born on August 13, 1923 on the Lazeski farm in the Brombury area. She attended Winthorpe School, where years later at a dance, she met her future husband, George Fushtey. They were married on October 29, 1944. They purchased land in the West Bend area. They had two children, Janis and Gerald. Together they were life long partners working on their mixed farm. Irene will be remembered as a tireless worker – from milking cows to field work, from planting gardens to preserving, cooking and baking, keeping an immaculate house and yard and raising a family. Irene and George retired to Foam Lake in 1977. She became involved in the Senior’s Centre, Ladies Auxiliary, curling, bowling, quilting and sewing group. One of Irene’s passions was sewing. She sewed most of her clothes. She re-adjusted every pattern, if she used one, and added her own flair. Bright colors also seemed a must. Sewing her grandchildrens’ clothing was next, until they learned about “labels”. She continued to tend to her garden and beautiful, colourful flower beds. She enjoyed having family and friend’s visit, which involved a great meal and conversation, and maybe a game of cards. She cherished the time spent with the children and grandchildren. There were pre-planned foods and activities, lots of hugs, laughs and conversation. Irene and George also enjoyed their US bus tours and visited family in several parts of Canada. Irene’s latter years were spent at the Foam Lake Jubilee Nursing Home, where she passed away on September 14, 2016 at the age of 93. She will be remembered as a woman who was soft without weakness, firm without harshness and truly kind by nature. She taught us to love life, each other, and to value family. Irene was predeceased by her parents John and Gafacia Lazeski; her husband of 67 years, George; her brothers; Fred, Max, Steve, Alex, Bill and Nick and her sisters; Dianne, Jean, Mary, Ann, and Katie. Irene is survived by her children; Janis (Larry) Way and Gerald Fushtey; her cherished grandchildren: Karen, Jeffrey, Christy Way and Nakita and Devon Fushtey. She is also survived by her brother, Mervin; her sister-in-laws; Evelyn Lazeski, Angeline Lazeski and Rose Fushtey and many nieces and nephews and friends.
