Agnes Josephine Burns (Nystrom) 1930 - 2013 Mom passed away peacefully at Wynyard Hospital in the early hours of Oct. 5, 2013 following a brief illness. She was 82 . Lovingly remembered and survived by her sister Lily, her children Dan, Blaine (Michele) and Shelley (Greg) Meier, and her four granddaughters Morgan and Rebecca Burns and Jaime and Erin Meier. Mom was born Dec. 27, 1930 on the family farm near Kandahar, SK. She was the youngest of nine children: Andrew, Anna, Olaf, Mary (Degenstein), Margaret (Latimer), Jonas, Lily (Allen), and Violet (Moller). She met her husband Jim in Lethbridge, AB and this is where all three children were born. In 1967 the family moved to Camrose AB. Dad passed away in 1971 and Mom moved us to Wynyard to be closer to her family. She held many different careers throughout her lifetime including teaching in a one room school house but her greatest passion was working in the bank. She retired from the Bank of Montreal as assistant Branch Manager in 1993. Mom enjoyed curling, card games, and scrabble, and watching the Blue Jays, but mostly looked forward to spending time with her kids and granddaughters.Funeral services will be held on October 11, 2013 at St Mary's RC Church in Wynyard. Interment and lunch to follow. Condolences can be posted online at www.narfasons.com. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully suggests donations be made to Mom's favoured cause, the St Mary's RC Cemetery Fund. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone for all of your help through Mom's illness and for your kind support and expressions of sympathy extended to us at this very sad time. She was an amazing lady and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. Agnes, or "Peanuts" as she was known to many, the youngest of nine children, was born on the family farm near Kandahar, Saskatchewan on December 27, 1930. Her siblings were Andrew, Anna, Olaf, Mary (Degenstein), Margaret (Latimer), Jonas, Lily (Allen), and Violet (Moller). Agnes attended school in Edgebrook until grade eight, took grades nine, ten and eleven by correspondence, and completed grade twelve at Wynyard High School. She then went to Saskatoon where she received her teacher's certificate. Her first year of teaching was at Product where she has said that the kids taught her more than she taught them. She taught for a few more years before deciding she wanted to travel a bit so she headed out to Trail, BC. While there her sister Vi arranged for an interview with the CIBC and within a week she was a bank employee. To her surprise she found she liked this better than teaching. She transferred with the bank a couple times before landing in Lethbridge, Alberta. It was here that she met Jim and decided to make another career change, to wife and mother. They were married on June 24, 1961. Her three children were all born in Lethbridge. Danny in 1962, Blaine in 1963 and Shelley in 1966. In 1967 Jim received a transfer to Camrose, Alberta with AGT. In the fall of 1970 Jim was diagnosed with cancer and after a short but courageous battle, passed away on January 24, 1971. That year Agnes and her three children moved to Wynyard so she could be closer to her family. That family support was soon given as her sister Lily and family took care of us while Mom did some upgrading in Saskatoon to renew her teaching certificate. She did some substitute teaching in Wynyard before becoming the kindergarten teacher. This was only part time and was financed by the mothers. She dearly loved this role but was later able to find full time work at the Credit Union doing what she liked most. After two years there she was ready for a new challenge and began working at the Wynyard Co-op Hardware store. In 1978 she returned to her preferred employment and started as a teller at the Bank of Montreal. She continued to work there until she retired in 1993 having risen to Assistant Branch Manager. Family always played a very strong role in her life. For several years following Jim's passing, we travelled each summer to Swift Current and Shaunavon to visit with Grandpa Bergeron, Grandma Burns and many other relatives on our dad's side of the family. The rest of the year was spent regularly visiting at the Allen farm, going to see Mary and Art, or walking over to Jonas and Elzita's home in town. In her later years Mom and Dan returned the support given by assisting her siblings in their golden years. Mom enjoyed playing cards, from solitaire to social games often including several friends and relatives around a big table lasting all evening, with the kids hovering and wanting to join in until we were old enough to play. There wasn't a card game she didn't enjoy and we all came to share that interest. She also enjoyed puzzles, especially crosswords, and developed a passion for Scrabble. We often accused Dan of making up words but he could always back them up with the dictionary. Most of all Mom enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was also very involved with the church as a member of the CWL, singing in the choir, and had served as Parish Council Treasurer for several years. Her reduced mobility in later years limited her participation but not her devotion. Mom was a very strong woman and did a great job raising us with the help of her family. She made many personal sacrifices for us but never once com- plained, and we never really wanted for anything. Her last thoughts were of us and she wanted to be sure her boys understood they had to be nice to their little sister. Agnes' family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness and ex- pressions of sympathy at this sorrowful time. She will be deeply missed by us and all those whose lives she touched.
