Obituary
Funeral Service 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 29, 2016 Nut Lake Lutheran Church Nut Lake District, Saskatchewan Our beloved mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, Ebba was born on September 29, 1918, along with her twin sister, Elsie, to Ellen and Chris Petersen on the Petersen homestead. She was the third oldest of ten children. Ebba and Elsie were very premature, and weighed around 2 pounds each. A neighbor lady said they’d never survive, which made their mother even more determined that they would. Their incubator was the warming oven of the cook stove. Ebba didn’t walk until she was two years old, because she was so weak. Ebba attended Pipestone School, and completed her grade eight there. She loved school and had many adventures that she loved to tell us about. She had a zest for life always willing to try anything at least once. She was a champion for the underdog often stepping in to protect anyone who needed help. She was also a “little mother” to her younger siblings. She loved them dearly, and would carry them around, rocking and consoling them. At fifteen years old, she started working out as a hired girl for various families in the community. She worked long, hard hours and her motto was, “anything worth doing, is worth doing well”, which she definitely did. Ebba spent some time cooking in the Rose Valley Hospital to replace Elsie while she was on holidays. Eventually, Ebba took the train, along with Esther Holt, to Vancouver and found work at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. While working there, Felix Holt came to visit his sister, Esther, and her friend Ebba. Felix proposed to Ebba, and she returned to Rose Valley with him. They were married November 13, 1943, in the Rose Valley Lutheran Parsonage. They lived on the Holt farm, farming with Felix’ parents, Ole and Nanny Holt in the West Shore District. Five children were born to this union, Mavis, Rodger, James (Jim), Gloria, and Grace. Ebba loved living on the farm, she raised chickens and turkeys, grew a big garden, milked cows, pitched hay in the hay flat and did whatever was required of her, whistling while she worked. Ebba was a fantastic cook, and her children have wonderful memories of coming home from school to the smell of bread baking, and Christmas dinners with a feast on the table. Ebba made every table look so welcoming. Ebba was an active member of the Nut Lake Lutheran Church Ladies Aide, while they were living on the farm, and Zion Lutheran Church Ladies Aide once they moved to Rose Valley in 1971. She sang with various church choirs and a quartet consisting of neighborhood ladies. She enjoyed bible study, and Ladies Take a Break. She was a member of the Rose Valley Museum spending many hours volunteering there. Ebba was also a member of TOPS, and enjoyed getting together with ladies for their weigh-in meetings, and then going out for lunch and visiting after. Ebba helped deliver meals on wheels in Rose Valley, alongside her sister Elsie. Ebba sewed many quilts for the Rose Valley Lutheran Church Fall Supper auctions. But Ebba’s greatest passion in life was, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved them dearly, and so looked forward to her visits with them.
