Obituary
Family was everything to Elsie, she always looked forward to getting together with family to celebrate special occasions. She was very close with her youngest sister Mary, they would decorate fancy birthday cakes for each other and both became well known in the area for their skills and were asked to decorate many beautiful wedding cakes over the years. Elsie always liked to keep busy, she was a very talented lady with an eagerness to learn. She used to sew her daughters’ dresses with matching ones for their dolls. Once her daughters got involved in figure skating, she sewed all of their dresses. She loved and planted gorgeous flowers and grew a large garden. She always canned her own produce and cooked for a large crew during harvest. She even ground her own grain and made the best fresh bread. She was a fantastic cook! She participated in many local events and had many hobbies including sewing quilts with the Margo Quilting Club. Elsie always had a thirst for knowledge. She mentioned a few times that she would have loved to attend University after graduation, she would have studied chemistry as she was always intrigued with formulating. She really enjoyed studying plants and wanted to contribute financially to the family farm. In the late 70’s, she became the first female farm herbicide dealer in Saskatchewan. She took the initiative to learn everything she could about what chemicals kill certain weeds and what ratios to mix them at. She became very successful through hard work and honesty and was awarded many trips which led to her and Paul travelling to such places as Barbados, Jamaica and Venezuela. In her fifties when most would contemplate retirement or at least a slower pace she wrote her Herbology Exam and aced the test getting 100%. She had developed a keen interest in the health benefits of some of the weeds she had previously tried to get rid of, especially the Portulaca plant. She questioned “why would God put these weeds in my garden and what’s in this weed that makes it so strong and hearty?” Her inquisitive mind led her to study the weed, and she approached the University of Saskatchewan who confirmed her findings that out of the 16,000 plus plants and weeds, Purslane was in the top 20 for health benefits. Her next question was “how can I retain most of that nutritional benefit in powder or liquid form?” In 1999, when she had answers to all of her questions, she founded Natural Plantation, a successful company that continues today. She, along with her husband Paul, and daughters Jackie and Brenda attended many health expos in Canada and USA promoting her products and company. She received many accolades and awards for her work, products and company. Since she was known in the industry as one of the most knowledgeable people about the portulaca plant, she was encouraged to write a book to share her knowledge, so she did, and called it “The Wonders of Purslane”. Her thirst for education continued and she went on to get her Certified Lymphologist Certificate which helped her formulate even more amazing products. Elsie was very proud of her family and after her diagnosis her wish was to someday walk her daughter Brenda down the aisle, see her grandson Judah grow up and to continue her work with clients and formulate new products. Thankfully her wishes were fulfilled. She went from a shy, humble farm wife to a well-respected and knowledgeable business woman, her products and gift of intuition have helped thousands of people over the years. Her loving husband, Paul, was always very supportive in everything she did and everything she wanted to accomplish. Elsie and Paul had a very loving relationship and were true soulmates for almost 60 years.
