On March 1st, 1927 Emily was the ninth of twenty-one children born to Harry and Mary (Wasylynka) Powaschuk on the family farm. She received all of her education at Rushville School. Emily met Steve Kostyk and were married on June 8, 1947. Steve moved Emily half a mile north of her home to start their new life on the Kostyk homestead. Together they farmed and raised six children. Emily was a devoted wife and mother. She kept busy with providing for her family through her gardening and baking, raising chickens and milking cows. Lunches, coffee and meals were always brought out to the field at harvest time. No one ever left her house hungry! In 1973, Emily went to work at Golden Acres where she was employed for fifteen years. She accepted the Head of House Keeping position with pride and dedication. Getting to work from the farm posed a challenge with no drivers licence, so with courage she took the test, and after more than one try, she could now drive herself to work! In 1993 Steve and Emily moved from the farm to Wynyard due to Steve's health. She cared for Steve until he became a resident at Golden Acres. Not a day went by that she did not go to be with him there until his passing in 2006. Faith in God and devotion to church was central to Emily. She was a member of the UCWL and choir. Helping with the life and work of the church was always important. Family was first and foremost to Emily. Nothing made her happier than to have her kids around her - especially if it was her grandchildren. Each one was her "Precious Little Angel". She loved each one as much as the other. In 2012 Emily moved to Golden Acres. She passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2013 with family by her side. We will remember her for her kind, gentle smile and the love she felt for everyone. She is predeceased by her husband Steve; parents Harry and Mary; sisters Polly, Irene, Anne, Nettie, Mary; brothers William, Steven, Conrad, Walter, Albert, Joe, Harry, Ernest. Left to celebrate her life are her children Larry (Rilla), Dave, Judy, Karen (Al), Harvey (Dianne), Greg (Bev); sisters Kay, Margaret, Teresa, Pauline, brothers James, Gus, Methoday, daughter-in-law Becky; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
