Obituary
Miriam Elizabeth (Gould) Gair was born on February 23, 1932 in Islay, Alberta. She was the youngest daughter of Tillie and Frederick Gould. Miriam adored her older brother Cecil. Her sister Vivian was older by nine years. The family income was agricultural based and much of Miriam’s interest in life were attributed to this rural upbringing. Some of her interests included hunting, fishing, and horseback riding. Miriam had a competitive nature which showed up in her sporting activities. Miriam’s greatest passion was art which she developed at a very young age, at 10 years of age she entered a contest with a picture colored with crayons of that era. Miriam won the prize of an oil painting set. This marked the start of her painting career. Miriam was very fond of her mother but moved to Sedgewick to live with her sister to enable her to finish her high school education. It was at this time that she was coaxed by one of the nuns in the area to proceed with a higher education. In 1955 Miriam graduated as a Registered Nurse. This began her long career in the nursing field. While working in Wetaskiwin, she met the love of her life, Glen Gair. They were married shortly after on December 26, 1956 in Strome, Alberta. Glen and Miriam both had a common interest with family, cattle, and horses. In 1958, Robert Glen was born, and it was shortly thereafter that they moved to the family farm in Strome, Alberta where David Wayne and Laurie Catherine completed the family unit. They eventually moved north where they took up residences in several towns including Berwyn, Grimshaw and Fairview. In 1981 when they became empty nesters, they moved to Calgary where Miriam attended U of C and graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Fine Art. This was no small feat at the age of 50. After completing her degree, Glen and Miriam moved back to Peace River to follow Glen’s passion for farming. This enabled Miriam to return to nursing where she became the supervisor of Community Health for the area. Farming would come to an end for Glen and Miriam in 1999 when Glen took sick and passed away. Having retired, Miriam stayed on the farm taking time to enjoy painting, gardening, golfing and serving on several committees. 2006 saw the last relocation for Miriam to Wadena, SK. Miriam had a hard time leaving the beautiful surroundings of the Peace River Valley and the friends that she made over the years. Moving to Wadena allowed her to live near her daughter and family. This enabled Miriam to pursue her second passion, which was fishing. She was in constant competition with Ray. Still not clear, but it has been stated by each that they were the better fisherman. Miriam would be a part of Laurie and Ray’s family activities including hockey, camping and vacations. Miriam stayed active in Wadena and had many circles of friends. These friends joined her in her love for art, golfing and volunteering in the community. She was a member of the CWL, Health Auxiliary, Quill Lake Arts Council, Fitness Group, and a board member of Spruce Manor. For the past few years Miriam struggled with her health and on April 23, 2018 she passed away with family by her side. Left to mourn are her children David (Joanne), Laurie (Ray), daughter-in-law Lynne and grandchildren Richie, Derrick, Cory, Kyle, Meagan, Steven, Shaun and Curtis and 9 great grandchildren. Miriam was predeceased by her parents, siblings, her husband Glen, son Robert, and Granddaughter Catherine. A Funeral Service was held for Miriam on April 28, 2018 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Wadena, Saskatchewan with interment at the Wadena Cemetery. Donations in memory of Miriam may be made to the Familial Polyposis/Familial Gastrointestinal Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Narfason’s Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, Wadena, Saskatchewan.
