Obituary
Iris Ellis was born May 26, 1930 in Wynyard to parents Alex and Mayme Pelepian, but she spent most of her life in Regina. Iris had a number of jobs—she began working for Crawford Foods in the early days of the local plant. She also operated a cafe in Elfros. In Regina, she drove a taxi for Capital Cab, then became a dispatcher for the cab company. She was office manager for Prairie Advertising and then she ended her working career with the Scotiabank Data Centre. While in the city, Iris met Jim Ellis and they were married. The couple bought a house in the early 1980’s and it had a huge yard. Through the years, with a lot of hard work, she transformed it into a showpiece with many beautiful flowerbeds and ornamental shrubs and trees. In the summertime you could usually find her sitting in the backyard, having a smoke and a cup of coffee, admiring the fruits of her labour. Her interest in gardening must have been inherited from her parents, who were both avid gardeners. Iris and Jim were not big travellers, but one vacation they especially enjoyed was a trip to Scotland in the 1970’s. It was Jim’s birthplace and also home to Mayme’s clan, the McArthurs. When Iris retired, she took up another hobby—crocheting. It almost became a full time job. She travelled to many craft shows in the fall and winter months where she sold the clothing, scarfs and afghans she had made throughout the remainder of the year. Every spare corner of her house was taken up with bundles of yarn, pattern books and crocheting supplies. Unfortunately, in the past couple of years her health didn’t permit her to continue going to shows. Iris was also a member of the Zion United Church in Regina, She attended church regularly and never missed a fowl supper or a pot luck dinner! Sadly, Jim passed away in 2008, and in 2012 Iris moved into an apartment (which didn’t really please her.) In June 2015 she fell and broke her hip and needed full time care, so she came to spend her final year at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Wynyard. She passed away June 30, 2016. Iris is survived by a daughter Susan Mack and husband Werner and a son Jack Maluga. A Family Funeral Service will take place at a later date.
