She was the only child born to the union of Walter and Jessie Sunderland. Her parents farmed in the Scrip district near Walter’s siblings. Life was busy on the farm and being the only child, she was expected to assist her father with chores; milking cows, helping in the fields, feeding chickens, etc., as well as helping her mother with household tasks. Mom spoke fondly of her childhood on the farm and despite being an only child, she was surrounded by numerous cousins, the Sunderland’s and the Marshalls who became and continued to be an important part of her life. Her days were filled with outdoor adventures, attending the Scrip school and of course, work. When Mom was a teenager, she and her parents moved to Wadena due to her father’s declining health. Mom attended the Wadena High school and worked part-time at the Wirtz’s dairy farm washing milk bottles and at the local hospital, as well as assisting her Mom with her father’s care. Upon graduation from high school, Mom began teaching at Silverview School near Wadena which was quite an eye-opening experience for a young 18-year-old girl. The following spring, she attended Normal School in Saskatoon and upon completion continued her teaching career, first at Brand school near Kelvington and then at Archerwill. While teaching at Brand, Mom met the love of her life, a farmer, Garnet Booth. After a lengthy courtship, they married on August 15, 1955 and moved to Dad’s family farm in the Meadowbank district. Upon her marriage, Mom retired from teaching and embraced her life as a homemaker. In 1958, they welcomed their first child, Marilyn to their family, followed by the birth of Lorraine in 1962 and the arrival of Michelle in 1964. Life was busy on the farm. Mom kept a meticulous home and farm yard. She was a superb cook and there was often the smell of fresh baking wafting from the kitchen. Like her mother, Mom was an excellent seamstress, sewing our clothes and manufacturing costumes sometimes late into the night. She and Dad actively engaged in the Meadowbank community which at the time was bustling with many young families - the Irving, Lowndes, Harrison, Leitch and Tweidt families to name a few and Mom developed life long friendships with her Meadowbank neighbors. She belonged to the Meadowbank Ladies Aid for many years and volunteered as a leader of the 4-H Sewing Club and the Explorer youth group at the church. She was an involved parent, driving her girls to music lessons, band practices, music festivals, swimming lessons, summer camps, summer jobs, while volunteering in any capacity with their activities. After raising her family, she returned to the work force, employed as a home care assessor with the local home care office for a few years before once again retiring to enjoy her life with Dad on the farm. Sadly, Dad passed away in 1994 and Mom made the difficult decision to leave the farm. She moved to Kelvington and once settled, she expanded her network of friends, enjoyed going for coffee and became a member of the Lodge Auxiliary. Her home was a second home to her grandchildren, and she was an always present cheerleader at their many activities. Mom never missed an opportunity to visit her children and grandchildren. She was utterly devoted to them. As Mom’s health declined, she moved to the Manor in Kelvington and then in the summer of 2014 moved to the Kelvindell Lodge. She passed away peacefully on July 7, 2020 with her daughters at her side. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Jessie and her husband Garnet as well as her brother in laws (Aubrey Booth, Alvin Booth, Bill Lawrence & Clayton Crawford) and sister in laws (Irene Booth, Irene Lawrence, Irene Booth & Merle Crawford). She is survived by her three daughters and their families: Marilyn (Tim) Kucey – children; Nathan (Kim) (great grandson, Connor), Kristina (Billy), Alicia; Lorraine (Bill) Doeleman – children; Phillip, Ross and Scott; Michelle (Barry) Marquette – children; Robert, Hayden, Danika and Jocelyn. Mom was devoted to her family and was a trusted friend. Her presence in our lives will be missed dearly and we will cherish the memories of our time with her.
