Obituary
Wilfred August Byman was born on November 23, 1935 to Charles and Mable Byman. He attended school at Bear Lake, Sunderland school, and then Wadena High School. Once he completed his education, he went to Kitimat, B.C, and then to Prince George, B.C., to work in the sawmill. At the time, the mill had no job for him, but they offered a bunkhouse to sleep as well as food until someone quit. He worked for the winter at the mill. In his words, “I may as well have stayed home for what I made.” The mill had broken down, and they were only paid for what the mill put through. When he returned home, he began working for John Johns who started him as a backhoe operator. He also worked for Alex Bazelinski, doing the same type of work. While at a wedding dance in Hendon, he met the love of his life, and on April 14, 1958, Wilfred married Bertha Labanowich in Fosston. After their marriage, they moved to Lynn Lake for a year and then returned to Kylemore, where they would begin their life journey together, farming and raising four children. Wilfred displayed an unparalleled work ethic up until the day of his passing. He did many different things throughout his life and approached every endeavor with commitment, and ensured the job was done right. Wilfred purchased his home quarter of land from his uncle and began farming. While continuing to farm, he purchased a backhoe and started his own business, “Byman Trenching.” He helped many people both in Wadena and the rural community build new homes with the digging of their basements and digging in their water lines. He was contracted for over 40 years and worked many long hours with the Town of Wadena. He was also contracted by SaskTel, Sask Energy and Saskpower. Wilfred was a workaholic, but he always found the time to have fun. He formed many lasting friendships throughout the years and always found the time for a visit, especially with his kids and grandkids. He was young at heart and had a zest for life he was always willing to share with others. His strong will, quick wit, great sense of humor, and a passion for life took him far in whatever he decided to do. Wilfred was like an encyclopedia; he had a keen memory and remembered exact times and dates of different events. On May 15th, at the age of 85, Wilfred was called to join Bertha. We are certain she had a few bones to pick with him, but we know she was anxiously waiting for him to come home. Wilfred will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by children; Todd; Brenda (Myles), and her family Brett, Brittanny (Trevor); Marty (Shelley) and their family, Larissa (Carey), Tyler, Cody (Jaclyn), Jared (Sydney); Stuart (Susanne) and their family, Jonas (April), Tyson, Winston, and Adrian; three great-grandchildren: Hayley, Harlow, and Knoex; sister; Doris Byman; brothers, Keith and Eugene; numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends.
