Obituary
The funeral Mass for the late Mary Bzdel was held on August 1st, 10:00 A.M in the Wynyard Sacred Heart Chruch with burial at St. Micheal's Cemetery in Wishart Sk. Mary was born on May 2, 1915, on the homestead in Wishart. She was one of 13 children to Oleska Wasyluk and Annie Tomko. She attended Halicz School and was involved in farm work- milking cows, feeding chickens, cooking and looking after her 7 brothers. Mary married Alex Bachynski on July 21, 1935. She had 3 children: Dora, Leo and Olga. One of the first women in the area to have a drivers license, she delivered cream to Kelliher and picked up supplies in Wishart or Pummichy. One trip to town was well remembered by her late sister Barbra. The roads were very muddy, and, therefore, slippery and slick. She hit the ditch-but kept driving. In her words " it was in and out and we were gone" all the while sister Barbra was speechless. She loved farm life, looked after the animals and operated machinery. There wasn't much she wouldn't tackle- including makind a batch of home brew for Olga and Joe's wedding. She was a very strong, determined woman with a "we have got to do it now" attitude. Her first husdand, Alex, passed away on July 8, 1967. She married Nick Bzdel on June 2, 1969. They lived on a farm north of St. Micheal's Parish and were both faithful members of the church. She always planted a large garden with enough cabbage for cabbage rolles and potatoes for perogies to last the winter. SHe lived on 7 different farm locations, yet felt most at home on the farm near Punnichy. Even after moving to the farm in the Royal Rock School District, she continued to visit the "home place" brining food and caring for Leo's family. She was an amazing bread baker and would often come with her arms full of bread. The freezer was a terrific addition to her home, becasue it ment she could keep a full supply of doughnuts and perogies. After her husband, Nick Bzdel, passed away she eventually bought a house in Wynyard. This was a difficult move for her- leaving the farm and it's endless garden area. Soon she began to appreciate all the modern convieneces of living in town. She kept herself busy by making feather pillows and turned piles of scrap into colorful, warm quilts. She looked forward to the visits from family and friends always offering them a drink. Some of her special friends were Linda, who would bring her baked goods and decorated birthday cakes from the bakery. Rose Bzdel, who always visited with treats and Mrs. Chudyk, whom she enjoyed taking to the Shanty Inn Resturant. Mom eventually settled into the house and this home where she believed she would return while she lived for 2 years at Westview Apartment. While at Westview, she enjoyed new companions and recreation. She was encouraged to play shuffleboard. Her first attempts were always met with "No way", "I throw to hard" and then she became the Shuffleboard Champion. She was an independent lady driving her 1981 Ford half ton until she was 93 years old. When winter came, she would go out to the garage to check antifreeze levels. Still at the age of 97, she thought she should have her driver's license and drive her truck. Mary was predeceased by her husbands, Alex Bachynski and Nick Bzdel; sisters, Anna, Justina, Helen, Dora, Barbara; brothers, John, Mike, Bill, Paul, Mac, Pete, and Nick.
