Obituary
Mike Babecy was born on December 24, 1928 and passed away peacefully on November 3, 2020 at the Kelvindell Lodge. Mike was born to William (Bill) and Annie Babecy. He had five siblings; Harry, Margaret, Dora, John and Betty. They grew up on the homestead east of Kelvington. Mike attended Kelvington School until grade 10. From there he went to work in Ontario for six months. When Mike returned home from working in Ontario he continued farming with his brother John. Mike also hauled cattle to the local market. When Mike was around 25 years old, he met Doreen Bumford at a dance in Nut Mountain. They were married on October 29, 1956 at the Lintlaw United Church. Their life together was spent seeding the crop, gardening, milking the cows, raising all kinds of livestock from cows to ducks. They remained on the homestead where they raised their four children: Shelly (1957), Cheryl (1958), Garth (1960) and Darlene (1962). Mike and Doreen continued farming until they moved to Kelvington in 1996. From there, Garth and Cindy moved to the homestead and remained there until 2012 when they moved to Kelvington and to this day Kassey and Landon reside on the homestead as the fourth generation. Mike and Doreen were lifetime members of the Kelvington Agricultural Society. Mike loved to watch his children and grandchildren compete in the horse events. He was always seen working the gymkhana arena with his tractor with a big smile on his face. Mike was very active in the 4-H Beef Club and was a 4-H leader for many years. Mike along with Norman and Muriel Geck sponsor the trophy for the grand champion steer and still do to this day. Mike was also an active member of the Kelvington Fire Department and the Mason's. Their winters were spent at the local curling rinks with their friends curling in bonspiels. Sometimes as many as four in one weekend! Mike was still curling into his 80's. Mike was a man that could make friends anywhere. It wouldn't take him long to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger as he was such an easy guy to talk to. While waiting for an opening at the Kelvindell Lodge, Mike, moved to the Wadena lodge in January 2017, where he spent a month. In February, he moved to Porcupine lodge where he spent two months. On April 12, 2017, he was able to move back to his hometown where his wife would come to visit him each and everyday. Mike resided at the Kelvindell Lodge until his passing. Mike was known for always having a pocket full of peppermints. Mike is predeceased by his parents, William and Annie Babecy; Brother, Harry; Sister, Dora; Granddaughter, Shelbey Babecy and son in law, Russell Hrynkiw. Mike is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doreen; daughter, Shelly (Rob) Fouhse, grandchildren, Tyrel (Carson), Logan (Devan); daughter, Cheryl (Brian) Guenther, grandchildren, Amber (Adam), Ashley (Cory), Malorie (James); son, Garth (Cindy) Babecy, grandchildren, Jason (Randi), Bailey (Monty), Kassey (Landon); Darlene Hrynkiw, grandchildren, Michelle (Dallas), Brandon (Cassidy); seven great grandchildren, Kendra, Aiden, Chloe, Westyn, Ryker, Adley and Jadeyn.
