Obituary
Walter was born on July 6, 1926 on the family homestead south of Sheho to Nick and Pearl Slowski. A few years later, the family moved to the present farm location. Walter took his schooling in Sheho. Following that, he worked at various jobs in the area such as building houses, a threshing crew and then went to work at Copper Mountain B.C. for one winter. On the weekends, Walter played in a band at local dances and was very talented playing the guitar and fiddle. Walter married Caroline Nekon on April 30, 1954. They took over the family farm in 1959. In 1961 hail destroyed the crops. Walter, Caroline and their young family went to British Columbia where he worked for the winter then returned to the farm. In 1964 they built a new house in Sheho. Walter continued farming and also worked as the town maintenance man for many years. He was also a jack of all trades. Besides being a farmer, he was a carpenter, welder and mechanic and would tackle almost any job. He was also a member of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Committee, the Sheho Recreation Board in the early years and was a member of the Sheho St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox South Church. Walter “retired” from farming in 2008 at 81 years of age, but would still offer to lend a hand at the farm such as grass cutting and delivering meals to the field and looking after a large garden. He loved his John Deere 4840 tractor which he occasionally operated up until last year. Every morning you would see him out on his daily walk. Walter helped his friends and family whenever they needed a hand. They enjoyed hosting Sunday barbeques, whether they were at home or at the lake. Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Some of the camping trips turned out to be quite adventurous. He often spoke about the camping trip to the Geikie River which involved a very rough road and a container of borsch. Needless to say, the door popped opened on the camper fridge and there was borsch everywhere!! Poor Caroline had a big mess to clean up! They also travelled to South Dakota and went on an Alaskan tour. In their later years, they spent their summers at the Whitesand Regional Park. Walter was a very humble, wise, gentle soul. He had a great sense of humor, and loved his family unconditionally. Walter will be remembered and missed by his wife Caroline, son Randy (Debbie), Laine and Dean (Jessica); daughter Debbie (Ernie) Quintal, Monique (Amanda), Nicole (Josh); son Marvin (Pam), Amy; son Darcy (Jennifer), Tia and Hanna. Sister Gladys Harkness and many nieces and nephews. Walter is predeceased by father Nick (1982), sister Anne(2000), mother Pearl (2006). Donations in memory of Walter may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation 110-1525 Carling Ave. Ottawa, ON K1Z 8R9
