Memorial Service Wednesday, September 16, 2015 1:00 p.m. Narfason's Funeral Chapel Wadena, Saskatchewan In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doreen may be made to Wadena Hospital Palliative Care Fund, or Nature Saskatchewan - Room 206 1860 Lorne Street, Regina, Saskatchewan S4P 2L7 Doreen Francis Harvey was born on April 7th, 1930 in Wadena, Saskatchewan to Alex and Reta Tait. She was a sister to Ethel, Earl and Bob. The family lived on the east side of Wadena near the golf course and her father was employed at the Wadena Union Hospital for over 40 years. Doreen took all of her schooling in Wadena attending the old "red brick school" which was located on the site of the current Spruce Manor Lodge. After school like many other children of that era she was expected to work to help the family financially. She worked for several years for the Grahams at Wadena Grocery. In her late teens Doreen and her sister Ethel met a couple of rebellious young male trouble makers from Fosston. Despite well intentioned advice from her aunt Phyllis about "those Fosston boys" Doreen was swept off her feet by a handsome young man by the name of Irvine (Bud) Harvey and they were married on August 2nd, 1950. They settled in Fosston where they took over Harvey's Hardware store operating it for 19 years until 1969 when they sold out and relocated to Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. Three boys had been born by that time, Stewart in 1951, David in 1953 and Scott in 1964. Doreen and Bud stayed in Assiniboia for less than a year as tragedy struck the family when Stewart was killed in an automobile accident on March 15th, 1969 while completing his grade 12 at Rose Valley. That event profoundly affected Doreen as her family meant everything to her. Following the tragedy the family relocated to Wadena where Bud took up work at the Wadena Union Hospital. Doreen worked at a variety of retail positions over the next few years but was most content staying at home and raising her family. A family cabin was built at Marean Lake in 1964 and it was there where Doreen and Bud spent many summers with their family and friends. Doreen developed a love for nature especially song birds which she maintained until her passing. There was a friendly competition between her and son Scott over who had the most song birds at their feeder through the winter months. She also loved seeing wildlife on any trips out of town and she was always disappointed when someone would tell her they had seen moose, deer or elk on a trip while she had made a similar trip and had not seen anything. She was always so pleased to see wildlife of any kind. She loved animals and supported the SPCA for many years. She was especially fond of the dogs in her family. Doreen's greatest love, however, was reserved for her grand children. She was so proud of them and shared in as much of their lives as possible. She loved watching them grow and cared for them whenever possible. Bud passed away suddenly in 1999 leaving Doreen alone and broken hearted. It was at that time that a strong support group of friends began to surround her with affection and she carried on life so happy to have so many good friends. It is through these friendships that Doreen began to drive and deliver meals on wheels as well as offering her companionship and support to people who were alone in palliative care at the Wadena hospital. Doreen was a caring and passionate person who did this volunteer work well into her eighties when her health began to fail. Page 2 Doreen was predeceased by her parents Alex and Reta Tait as well as her husband Bud (1999), her son Stewart (1969) and her brother Earl (2014). She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children David (Bonnie) Harvey and Scott (Bertha) and her grandchildren Brittany Harvey, Aiden Harvey and Taylor Harvey as well as her sister Ethel Larson and brother Bob (Lynn)Tait and their families along with nieces and nephews and her many friends who meant so much to her. A memorial service was held at Narfason's Chapel in Wadena at 1:00 pm on September 16th, 2015 with interment at the Fosston Evangelical Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made in Doreen's memory to the Wadena Palliative Care Unit at the Wadena Union Hospital or Nature Saskatchewan #206-1860 Lorne Street Regina, Saskatchewan S4P-2L7.
