Vera Senkiw was born on September 2, 1921 in Zaleeschee Volyn Ukraine to Daniel and Zinovia Husak. Her parents, three older brothers (Gordon, Nicholas, and John), mom, and her younger sister Laurica immigrated to Canada in May 1928. The family initially settled in Northern Saskatchewan, but after a few days decided to leave that area so they could be closer to friends in the Wishart area; the family settled on a farm eight and a half miles west of Wishart. Vera attended Round Hills School; upon completion of grade eight she had to stop her schooling to help her parents out on the farm. Vera met her future husband Pete Senkiw shortly after, and were married at the Orthodox Church in Ituna on October 12, 1940. They briefly lived in Sudbury, Ontario where Pete worked in a nickel mine but came back to farming in Saskatchewan and eventually settled on the Senkiw family homestead. Once back in Saskatchewan they started their family. Three sons, John (1941), Bill (1943), and Orest (1948) and a daughter, Marusia (1954) were born. The two farmed until Pete’s passing on November 11, 1969. Vera decided to stay on the farm and her brother Peter took over farming the land. After his passing in 1996, Vera rented out the land and moved into her own house in Wynyard. She loved it there and was able to remain there until a month before her passing. Vera had many passions in her life. Family was of utmost importance; she was very nurturing and looked forward to the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren coming for a visit. Like most Ukrainian Babas, no one could leave the house hungry. Education was of big importance to Vera; she had wanted to be a teacher. Since this dream never came true for her, she encouraged her children to get a post-secondary education. Vera loved to cook, but especially to bake. We all have our favorite recipes. Gardening was another big love of hers; she grew many vegetables, fruits, and flowers. She also loved crafts; she sewed clothes, made quilts and pillows, embroidered, crocheted, and painted Easter eggs. Vera always enjoyed reading and this became a pastime for her when she could not do her crafts due to arthritis. Vera was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage; she was an active member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-first in Wishart and then in Wynyard. She used to teach Sunday school and sing in the church choir. Holidays were important to her; if she could she would have her celebrations around the Julian calendar, with as many traditions as possible. Vera was predeceased by her parents, husband, son John, grandson Michael, brothers Gordon, Nick, John, and Peter, sisters Stephania and Laurica, and daughter-in-law Linda. She is survived by her son Bill (Claudia), son Orest, daughter Marusia (Don), daughter-in-law Connie, nine grandchildren (Carey, Tracy, Annamarie, Robert, Andrew, Michelle, Steven, Stefanie, and Natalie), six great-grandchildren (Bella, Leo, Valentina, Hilary, Thomas, and Michael), two sisters (Olga and Nadia), and many nieces and nephews. Rest in peace. Be in God’s care. Vicnaya Pamyat-Memory Eternal
