Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 Grace-Aarnes Lutheran Church Wynyard, Saskatchewan Interment to follow at the Pleasantview Cemetery Donations in memory of Benny may be made to Grace-Aarnes Lutheran Church, Saskatchewan Arthritis Society, or Saskatchewan Diabetes Association Benhold (Benny) Zander was born September 10, 1925 south of Kandahar in the Edgebrook District. He was the sixth child of Daniel and Marie Zander. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John German Lutheran Church. At the age of two, his family moved into the Product District. Benny received his education at the Product school. Aside from a winter spent at a bush camp in Ontario, followed by a winter in Sudbury at the nickel mine and a winter at the mine in New Denver, B.C., Benny farmed together with his father until Daniel’s passing in 1965. In 1949 Benny met Ruth Sundquist. Benny and Ruth were married in Aarnes Lutheran Church in November of 1956. In October of 1961 their daughter Rhonda was born. Farming was Benny’s work and his passion. Early in his farming career he had purchased a welder. After taking a short course he had become quite adept at his new skill and became known as ‘Mr. Fix-it’. He was always willing to repair what was broken, saving his friends and neighbours trips into town, enabling them to return to their tasks at hand. Benny was a mixed farmer until 1981. Without any livestock to care for, Benny and Ruth began spending time taking road trips. They traveled through Alberta, Manitoba and of course, Saskatchewan. In 1993 Benny and Ruth purchased their house in Wynyard. Benny continued to farm until arthritis began to limit his abilities at which time he retired in 2003. Benny had an interest in travel. Over the years he and Ruth enjoyed a trip to Europe celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran faith. They embarked on a province wide road trip through B.C., stopping to visit family in Mackenzie, Vancouver and Fernie. A celebration of their 40th anniversary took them to their original honeymoon destination of Montana. A bus tour across southern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes would be the trip that would fulfill a life long dream. Benny passed away on Friday, March 4, at the Wynyard Union Hospital at the age of 90. He was the last of his siblings. He was predeceased by his mother in 1944, his father in 1965, his brothers Bert, Harold and Arnold; his sisters Hadie, Munda and Evelyn; brothers-in-law Henry Anderson, Bob Smith and Johnny Samchyk; sisters-in-law Gertie and Edna. Benny will be lovingly remembered by Ruth, his wife of 59 years, his daughter Rhonda, sisters-in-law Shirley Brooks and Gladys Anderson, brothers-in-law Ralph Anderson and Karl Sundquist, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart, each for their own individual personality.
