Obituary
Arlie was born to Verna Skjerven on November 5, 1934 in Saskatoon. He was raised by his mother and grand-parents and aunts and uncles. Arlie lived with his mother and Aunt Esther as they ran the telephone switchboard in Kandahar. He started and went to school in Kandahar. Arlie spent lots of time on the home farm with Henry and Natalie Skjerven and Uncle Albert. He loved driving horses as a young man on the farm. His mother married Harry Solvason in 1948. He lived there and in 1950, Evelyn was born so he had a half-sister. Arlie liked music and played four different instruments – banjo, guitar, violin and piano. He played in the Skjerven orchestra at local dances. Arlie started working for farmers around Kandahar, then he started working for a seismograph company in 1958 in southern Saskatchewan. At that time, he and Donald Sunquist bought a 1953 Meteor car together. They both worked for United Geophysical out of Calgary. For a few winters, Arlie was caretaker of the Kandahar curling rink with Lenny Auchstaetter. Arlie really enjoyed curling. Arlie worked on farms and a ranch in Alberta and for many years on Seismic in many different places – Alberta, B.C., N.W.T., and the Yukon. Arlie loved to visit relatives here and in North Dakota and Minnesota with Uncle Herman. He liked the U.S.A. beer and also the Canadian beer. Arlie had many cousins that loved him a lot and also many good friends that also loved him. Arlie was a kind man and fit in with the young and old. He lived in the Wynyard Hotel for over 40 years until his health failed. He then moved to Golden Acres where he lived for 5 ½ months. He passed away on July 11, 2020.
