Obituary
Ken Monych In the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 7th, 2016 at the Regina General Hospital, after suffering a severe stroke, Ken (Kenneth) entered into a peaceful eternal rest. Ken was born the third child to Peter and Katherine Monych (nee Protzak) on February 12, 1952, at the Foam Lake Hospital. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Foam Lake. It was at the Foam Lake High School where Ken was to begin his amazing journey, meeting his soulmate and the love of his life, Verna. Ken was united in marriage to Verna on June 2, 1973, at Model Farm Ukrainian Catholic Church in the West Bend District. Ken and Verna lived in Foam Lake for the past 42 years, having 2 sons: Darren and Kevin, as well as 4 darling grandchildren. Ken was an incredible grandfather and extremely close to his grandchildren. He spent any spare time he had playing and teaching them all he could. Family was very important to Ken. Not only did he spoil his grandchildren, but he was an active part of all his nieces and nephews lives and cherished them dearly. Ken and Verna shared adventures travelling overseas to Germany, France and England. They visited Niagara Falls, made frequent trips to Vancouver and Calgary visiting their sons and grandchildren. Ken and Verna also enjoyed leisurely Sunday drives to visit neighbouring communities and allow Verna a chance to shop. When Ken wasn’t working he could be found in the garden helping Verna pull weeds, plant and maintain their beautiful garden. Ken also had some hobbies that included making wine and beer and sharing it with friends and family. Ken began his first profession at the Pioneer Grain Elevator in Foam Lake where he continued working as the Manager for just over 20 years. He later transitioned careers working for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance for over 25 years. In addition to his work, Ken regularly farmed with his brother Lawrence on the family farm and most recently farmed with the Bulych family (Jim, Delores, Jason, Curtis and Travis). Ken’s enthusiasm for being on the farm and helping others was only surpassed by his devotion to his wife and best friend Verna. Ken had a well-known presence in the community that he valued deeply and was recognized as a leader, particularly with the Recreation Centre. For over 30 years he was involved with the Recreation Centre in various capacities ranging from President of the Men’s Curling Club, President of Minor Hockey, Executive of Foam Lake Flyer’s Hockey Club. He also announced Flyer’s games and assisted with score keeping. There was no task too large or too small for Ken. He was always willing and pleased to serve his community wherever he could. Ken was also on the Foam Lake & District Leisure Services Board as the Recreation Centre representative. Ken is survived by: his son Darren, daughter in-law Elsa, grandchildren: Emma and Rose; son Kevin, daughter in-law Leah, grandchildren: Jude and Ruby; sister Marlene, brother in-law Bruce Dashney of Delburne; brothers: Morris, sister in-law Arlene of Foam Lake, Lawrence of Sheho; sister-in-law’s Audrey (Phillip) Skalozub of Lake Lenore, Jenny (Donny) Pillipow of Preeceville, Theresa and Edna Dlugan of Calgary, Iris (Terry) Stacheruk of Foam Lake, Angeline Sereda of Regina; brother-in-law’s Metro (Elizabeth) Dlugan of Yorkton, Robert (Genevieve) Dlugan of West Bend, Peter Dlugan of Foam Lake, and many nieces and nephews.
