Obituary
Sigmar Elmer Olafson was born July 4th, 1931 to Baldur and Magnea Olafson of Leslie Saskatchewan. He was raised on their farm south of Leslie with his three older sisters and two brothers, one older and one younger. He attended Wallhalla School and later joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served from 1950 to 1955. While in the Navy he was stationed at Shearwater Nova Scotia and spent a majority of his time served, onboard the HMCS Magnificent which was an angle deck aircraft carrier. He was part of a mechanical crew who maintained Sea Fury fighter planes and Grumman Avengers. By the time he left the Navy he had achieved the rank of Petty Officer II. He also did a short stint aboard the British Aircraft Carrier Ocean which was headed for the Korean War just as the Armistices was called. In 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to his country. When he returned home to Saskatchewan he lived and worked with his Mother and brother Swain on the Olafson homestead six miles north east of Bankend. In 1961 he met neighbour Margaret Rose whom he married in 1962. They moved a house onto the farm and raised three daughters Sharolyn, Deborah and Laurel. He continued to raise cattle and grow mostly Canola and Wheat until he retired at the age of Seventy-Eight. He has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for Fifty- Five Years, first with Leslie branch #172 and more recently with Foam Lake Branch #16. He has held the position of Sergeant at Arms and President a number of times. Throughout his life he continued to have an avid interest in the Armed Forces and never passed up the opportunity to tell a navy story or two to anyone interested. He was an avid reader and had a particular interest in war and battle strategy. He was interested in current affairs and like television shows like W5 and Fifth Estate. He is pre-deceased by his wife Margaret, his brothers Magnus and Swain and his sisters Kristine Goodman and Lauga Josephson. He is survived by his Sister Johanna Letourneau, his daughters Sharolyn and her children Gillian and Jordan, Deborah and her daughter Skylar and Laurel her husband Martin and their children Gabriella, Anthony and Madelyn as well as various other relatives. He will be remembered for his quiet and humble manner, his generosity to his family and his great navy stories. We wish you well Dad/Grandpa we know you are sitting with Mom/Grandma now enjoying her company which you have missed these last seven year. Go with our love…you will be missed.
